MIXTAPE MONDAY: stars (video edition).

I could whip up a little doozy of a mixtape in no time, but instead I've decided to focus on one song and one song alone today. I had to drive out of town for a little bit today on my own and my iPod just happened to be on Stars as I got in the car. I decided to leave it there and I played "Your Ex Lover is Dead" the entire way there and the entire way back (50 minutes each way).

It's such a significant song to me. It's absolutely beautiful. The lyrics, the timing, the instruments... I've managed to tack so much emotion to this song and I can't help but cry a little every time I hear it (don't worry, they're the good tears!)

I'm going to post the video and the lyrics below, but here is why it's so special to me... It's like a retrospective look back at a relationship between two people who were better off in the longrun by being apart. She was willing to give it all and truly commit, but he couldn't make up his mind. And here they are... running into each other after such a long time. She remembers him but he can't quite remember her name. She's gone on and met someone she truly loves and while she doesn't regret anything ever happening between them, she's not sorry that it's over.

Maybe I just feel so drawn to it because it feels so autobiographical, but to know the feeling behind every single one of those words... it's powerful. Being with someone for three years and apparently being the last willing to admit defeat, I can honestly say that I am happier than ever with the person I've found. Life has an interesting way of working itself out. I truly believe the words "live through this and you won't look back"... I'm only 22 so I can safely say that without hesitation, walking away from that three year relationship was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I'm sure I'll be faced with much more trying matters in the future, but for now, that was it for me. And to know that I was able to come out of it stronger than ever, I feel truly blessed... because I won't lie... there for a minute or two, I doubted my ability.

God, that was strange to see you again

Introduced by a friend of a friend
Smiled and said, "Yes, I think we've met before"
In that instant it started to pour

Captured a taxi despite all the rain
We drove in silence across Pont Champlain
And all of that time you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name

This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin
You tried to reach deep but you never got in
And now you're outside me, you see all the beauty
Repent all your sin

Nothing but time and a face that you'll lose
I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
I'll write you a postcard, I'll send you the news
From the house down the road from real love

Live through this and you won't look back
Live through this and you won't look back
Live through this and you won't look back

There's one thing I have to say so I'll be brave
You were what I wanted
I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save

Do you have a specific song that feels like it was written just for you? If so, feel free to share below! I'd love to give them a listen.

  4. This song was beautiful! I'm definitely going to check out more songs by the band.

Re: a song that feels like it was written for me - the lyrics of Rilo Kiley's Portions For Foxes are exactly what happened between me and a boy who was never quite a boyfriend. And it's a pretty song too, which is nice =]

  5. Loving the video edition! And, of course, the song! <3

I've got a handful of songs that I often feel were written for me. But right now, for where I am, the song that comes to mind is "Girls" by Nizlopi off the Half These Songs Are About You album.
