// Here's To Being 25!

Things that are weird: officially saying "I'm 25"... yow! That number is so weird to me. It feels like I should have my crap figured out by now, ya know? I've always thought that came with 22... then 23... then surely 24. But nope. Here I am - still feeling like I'm perpetually 12. I'm starting to realize that may just be how things work. Will I ever actually feel like an adult?

I'm still working on my "25 before 26" goal list... as usual (Spoiler: Kinda flopped on my 24 before 25! ha!) What are some of the goals you've put on your lists?! I need some inspiration! (Yep, totes gonna steal them if they're good! haha) I'll be working on my list this week so I'll share it soon!

I'm off to get tattooed again today! Yesterday was super well and the thigh was actually a breeze. I'm in love with it so I can't wait for it to heal :) xo

// Things I Love Thursday v.129

Happy Thursday! I'm so excited for today (and this weekend!) because our best friend Christina just got into town last night! So many fun plans for the next few days - Apologies ahead of time if I'm out of pocket for a bit! You can always reach me via Twitter! // Kaelah's Closet + Mini-Design Update

Hey friends! Happy Wednesday :) I wanted to pop over and tell you all that I just added 76 new items to Kaelah's Closet last night. I tweeted out the link around midnight and several of the items are already gone, but if you're keen to take a look, feel free! A lot of them still have their tags on them... which is kind of shameful. I have even more to get rid of and list over the coming weeks so stay tuned. From here on out I'm buying with intention, not just because something is "so cute!" It just ends up getting lost in my closet anyway.
I've already been asked dozens of times, but yes, I do ship internationally. Just pick international shipping at checkout. (Please note that there was a recent USPS price increase for international shipping!) If there's an overcharge for shipping, I'll gladly refund it once I have the receipt!

Also worth noting: I gave LCH a mini (tiny, itty bitty) facelift last night, too. Just the navigation and sidebars mostly. I also cut off a bit of the header so it didn't take up the whole page, and then I made the blog about 200 pixels wider so it didn't feel so cramped. I went through about 50 posts and resized the images (UGH!) but there's still 1750+ to do! You'll notice a "//" at the beginning of edited blog post titles. That's just my way of keeping up with what I've edited already.
I know the pink of the sidebar feature headers is a little light for most people - I'll be tweaking things like that over the coming days. I'm hoping to really organize this messy, messy blog! I'm also working on several supporting pages so hopefully those will go live/be apparent soon. Can you see a huge difference in the graphic color quality? In the header, especially! I swapped everything over to Flickr and now my images look like they're supposed to! I doubt I have it in me to reupload and edit all 1800 posts, but I'm going to do as many as I can. From here on out I'll be hosting on Flickr, even though the extra steps are super lame haha.

Until next time, feel free to check it out and shop Kaelah's Closet! You can always tweet me if you need info on an item (@kaelahbee).

Oh! I am also accepting sponsors for April + beyond! Check out the stats + traffic, then shoot me an email if you'd like to see rates + sizes! The PRIME ad for April has already sold, but I'd love to get you on the list for May! I have plenty of XL ads left, too!

// Mastermind Sessions + Best Friends

On Saturday I met my friend Elle at Baja Burrito for a delicious lunch and a business chat. Elle is one of those people who just have it so together when it comes to life/career/basically everything. You can't help but be inspired when you're around her. Her work ethic is totally enviable (and somewhat contagious luckily!) She's currently working her way through Marie Forleo's B-School and man, the work load is crazy! She shared some of the exercises with me as we talked about her business and I was so impressed. In case you don't know, Elle is a paper/wedding stationery designer under the name Jam + Toast! Anyway - we chatted for well over 3 hours and by the end of it I just felt so motivated and inspired. She called our meeting a "Mastermind Session" and that was totally on point. We agreed to try and make this happen every 2 weeks or so that way we can both work our way through business blunders and help each other see a fresh perspective for whatever problems we may be facing. She's getting ready to move to Wilmington (!!!) at the end of May so our sessions will be via Skype, but I'm already looking forward to them! It was so so incredible to sit and just talk about ideas. "Is this a good idea? How do you feel about this? What do you think about ____?"
I really feel as though it was just the kick in the butt I needed to really really figure some things out. I've said it a few times (too many) now but I've just been teetering on the verge of something awesome (or so it feels!) but haven't felt the nudge I needed to just go full force. And as silly as this may sound, I think part of it has to do with the fact I don't feel super inspired by my office set up. We only just moved in but I think that paint switch needs to happen and something has gotta give with my clothes/shoes. I think I'd rather downsize all of those and have a more dedicated work space rather than it just be pretty. (Yikes! Just don't tell that to my husband who spent all those hours drilling holes in the ceiling haha I'll keep my wardrobe rack but I think the shoes might go? IDK! Getting sidetracked here!)
I keep thinking about all of our "businesses" (this blog, Honeybean, Him + Honey, design work, etc) and I want to consolidate them as much as possible. I want to rebrand certain aspects of stuff, have a dedicated work site for each one, and streamline everything on this blog. I wanted to redesign the  LCH layout, but every time I go to try I get hung up on the beautiful flowers and I just can't let it go. Until I feel comfortable with a full redesign, I'm just going to tweak the navigation and clear out the sidebars, all the while making it about 200 pixels wider. It's so cramped right now! I also want to launch some surveys/polls and get (anonymous) feedback from all of you.

I feel so blessed to know Elle and be able to spend time with her and chat about life, business, etc. She's one of my very best friends and she's such a great person to have in my life. I'm excited for her next chapter in North Carolina (We can't wait to visit!) but we'll miss her and Bryan so much! Saturday's meet up really made it obvious to me how much it helps to have someone you can talk to about things like that. We can relate to each other and help each other out along the way. Sometimes being a solo entrepreneur or small biz owner can be so daunting and stressful. You feel like you have nowhere to turn and no one to talk to (I mean, there's Mike but I'm talking about someone not directly tied into the success/failure of the business) -- we get to see each other reach goals and milestones. We can celebrate those small victories along the way.
If you have your own business (or want to start one), I highly recommend finding someone you can confide in and learn from. Almost like a mentor, but a peer. It's amazing how one little afternoon can make you feel so revived and inspired. I can't wait to put these new goals and ideas into motion.  While I know it's a flexible schedule and only a foundation, I already have all of April laid out. Here's to hoping it's beneficial to be back on the scheduling wagon! Thanks, Elle

Do you have anyone like that in your life? If so, do you feel like it's helped you succeed?

// 25th Birthday Wishlist

My birthday is coming up in just under 2 weeks (March 30th. Aries, woo!) and I thought I'd share a little birthday wishlist. Mike used to hate buying gifts because he felt like he never knew what to get, so wishlists became the norm. He's definitely grown much more accustomed to (and better at!) shopping for surprises so now they're just for fun. This year the mix is an assortment of home goods and decor, dresses with longer hemlines, and makeup. I could easily make a wishlist about 3 miles long, but these are just a few of my favorite wants.

one // stila color balm lipstick in "betsey" - the bright fuschia is perfect for spring!  two // be my honey dress - a sweet yellow dress with a honeybee pattern.. I mean, obviously! ♥ three // show off mascara - this is my favorite mascara by far, and my tube is running thin! ♥ four // white ruffle duvet via urban outfitters - a little (lot) feminine, but it'd look so pretty in our bedroom! ♥ five // MAC lipstick in "russian red" - the perfect red! but I'd love any/all pinks, too! ♥ six // aqua zig zag rug via urban outfitters - this would fit in our living room so well! we're on the hunt for the perfect rug to go under the new coffee table mike built. ♥ seven // be mine plugs (1.5") via omerica organic - these sweetheart plugs are too cute. ♥ eight // make up for ever HD blush in "neutral pink" - lighter than a powder for the humid months coming our way. ♥ nine // geometric terrarium via urban outfitters - I want so many plants in our home! ♥ ten // made in the shades dress - a little bit of autumn color for the warmer seasons. ♥ eleven // drinks on me dress - this would be the perfect dress to host a cocktail party in! ♥ twelve // succulents - everywhere! tons of them! ♥ thirteen // a new tufted couch - this one is UO, though my dream couch is the nixon!
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

And I'd like to win a spot in the Big Blog Exchange!
haha Care to toss a vote my way? It'd be so fun to share my adventures on LCH!

Any fellow Aries ladies out there?
I'm just trying to take my mind off the fact that I'm turning 25... I always thought I'd have my life "together" by then... Maybe we'll shoot for 26?! What's on your current wishlist?

// Recent Design Work

Today I thought I'd round up a handful of projects from the last several weeks to share. Trying to juggle design work on top of moving and renovating was a bit difficult, but I'm glad to be back in the groove. I was surprised how busy I stayed with design work over the holidays, especially when I was considering scaling back to rehash all of my ideas. I'm still in the phase (aren't I always?!) but I have a more clear-cut vision of what it'll entail, and of course I'll be sharing that before too terribly long. (I always seem to have something to unveil... I promise it's not that exciting haha) Anyway, here's what I've been up to:
[brand identity + print + blog overhaul]
I worked on a blog overhaul of Christian back around the holidays. She wanted to really focus on organic textures and have a "natural" feel about her blog while still keeping it really simple. She really liked clean, thin typefaces and wanted to have a large content area. This is what ended up coming of that. She's currently in the midst of opening an organic baby boutique and I was honored to play a role in the brand identity portion. She wanted something that was cohesive with her blog, but could stand on it's own. Since Everyday Baby didn't have a mark of any sort, we decided to play up the geometrics of her header in a slightly more graphic manner. The logo will also be a 2'x2' exterior sign on the storefront. The two pieces on the top right side are her business cards. I can totally see the graphic pattern being used on tissue paper and hang tags for the store. I'm really excited to see what comes of Christian's venture!
[brand identity]
Alexis first contacted me about a blog overhaul, but then decided to put it on the back burner to focus on her new foray into the food truck world. She's also the one who inspired me to give gyros a go! (We still haven't ventured over since the good places are so far away, but it's on the schedule!) The initial logo we had worked on a bit was totally different from this one -- more of a detailed badge style. Once I sent over this more modern, upscale mock, we had a hard time deciding what would be a better fit for a food truck like hers. In the end, she opted for the more clean-cut look with the bold colors, playing up the square edges and the intersecting lines of yellow mark. I can't wait to see how it translates onto the truck!

[blog overhaul]
Abi's blog was such a treat to do! I'm a fan of color, but this girl lives for color! I don't think I would have ever thought to propose such a wild and playful background, but that was all her doing. She knew what she wanted and I was just there to fill in the little pieces along the way. Abi's illustrations are so lively and sweet. She wanted to really show that in her header, so we did just that. She wanted to keep the rest of it pretty minimal, but she had to have the scalloped edges. I think if you were to pay her blog a visit, you'd see just how perfectly it fits her style.

[blog overhaul]
Ashley's blog design was fun to do because of the details she wanted to incorporate. The branches, the owl, multiple navigations and the prominent rating system for her book reviews. She wanted to focus on keeping the colors muted, but still happy. It's the perfect chilled atmosphere to feel relaxed when you're reading about... well, reading!

[brand identity + blog overhaul]
Emilie is an old LiveJournal pal of mine and she is currently getting ready to launch a new online boutique for women and she wanted both a logo and a blog to set the stage. Above is the blog design mock (currently being installed + filled with original content). Emilie likes to play up the whimsical side of things and opted for a crown mark for the logo, and a unicorn for the blog. She was fond of the hand-drawn letters I made for one of my past blog designs so I tweaked it and used it for the header. She also liked the lightness of the watercolors because it still provides a little bit of gravity behind the content area. I think my favorite part is the buttery yellow color that acts as an element of surprise against the rest of the mauves and pinks. I'm excited to see how this one fully comes alive once it's launched! I definitely want to do more work with watercolors.

[semi-blog facelift]
Zoe wanted a fresh slate to launch her new blog, but didn't want to go hard and heavy with all of the bells and whistles. She opted for a half-package which included enough visual perks to lay out the land, but also gave her enough breathing room to grow into something naturally. She was very certain that she wanted a very clean, minimal look so that her content could really shine.

[blog overhaul]
Sara's blog was one of my favorite ones to do simply based on the colors and the visuals. She's a 20 year old pastry chef who documents her foodie adventures on her blog. I'm a sucker for ombre sidebar navigations so I'm glad she was into that as well. She doesn't like a cluttered sidebar so the outer columns remain light and airy. Her sharable blog buttons are some of my favorites just because they're happy buttons. Not even sure that makes sense, but the vibe of the whole thing is so great. She's such a sweet gal, too!
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Overall I've been really happy with the clients I've had lately. I've been itching to do more identity work and print, too, but I'm just happy when I get to work with people who jive with my style. (Yes, I totally said jive. I know.) Sometimes the overly-cutesy stuff can be a real turn-off for some, but I like that blog and identity work allow me to balance the two. Each and every designer clearly has his/her own style, and a good designer can adapt to suit the desires of the client, but it's great when someone seeks you out because they feel like what you do speaks to them in some way. You can't be everyone's cup of tea but the best kind of work is the kind you enjoy!

With that being said, I'm wrapping up my last open project today and I'd love to work with some of y'all if you're on the hunt for blog facelift, identity for your indie biz, or even just some blogging business cards! I've revamped my offerings and I'm happy to custom tailor packages to suit whatever needs you may have. If you're up to chat, shoot me an email [kaelahbee at gmail dot com]! I'd love to hear from you! Hope you have a great week!

PS; Some of the showcases above are the mock sites - they have placeholder blog posts and sidebar content to show the design's intention.

PPS; I get quite a few emails re: freelance design, and small biz owning in general. I was thinking of doing a blog post (or series) dedicated to answering these. If you have anything specific you'd like to ask, please feel free to leave it in the comments. You can always email it to me, or leave it on my FormSpring (I know, so 2009) if you'd prefer to be anonymous. I'm certainly no expert, and probably not all that qualified to be giving advice, but I can speak from my personal experience!

// Speckled Egg

These photos are the last ones from 2+ weeks ago. It's nothing special - to be honest I felt a little rough and tumble in this outfit. I think the cardigan just makes me feel like a speckled dinosaur egg (You can totally see that, can't you?). I snagged this cardigan for like $10 or something at H&M a few years ago, and it's never really found it's place in my closet. It's probably a bit too casual for this dress, too. But I do like any excuse to wear my Jeffrey Campbell 'Safety' shoes. I haven't shot any outfits in a while as I've spent the vast majority of the last week or so in my yoga pants and hoodie because it turned off cold again. Luckily the weather is insanely beautiful right now. Yesterday was so so gorgeous. We opened up the doors and windows, and we were so productive! It was 71 degrees and sunny! We managed to sort out more of our living room and bedrooms, and we even made time to spend a small fortune in lumber so we can build some furniture for the house. We're hoping to spend most of tomorrow painting exterior doors and building a coffee table and shelving for the living room. Cross your fingers for cooperating weather!

Today Mike and I are photographing an engagement shoot at Radnor Lake in Brentwood. We're really excited since we've never shot out there before. The scenery is beautiful, but the crowds on a Saturday are insane! Here's to hoping we can wade through everyone else trying to enjoy the weather! We've been looking forward to this shoot for a few months now because our clients Madison + Paul totally know the look they're going for. I can't wait to see what sort of backdrops we can find! I'll try to share some sneak peeks on Instagram if you're keen!

After the shoot we plan to run some errands (drop off tattoo plan, pray my dream dress on hold fits, and locate some Prickly Pear soda!) and then maybe go see Caspian play at Exit/In. Caspian is totally my (#2) favorite band and I haven't seen since they played a tiny show at The Muse in like 2008 (?!). They are so good! If you're into post-rock/instrumental music (Explosions In The Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emporer, etc) you should definitely give them a listen! I maybe totally hinted (read: told) Mike I'd love their record for my birthday.
We're on a (sort of self-imposed) time-crunch to get things done around the house since we'll be having house guests soon. Luckily Brian + Christina have totally been witness to our house in barely-moved-in mode so it won't be anything they're not used to! But I'd still like to have it all nice and ready for them, and for my birthday sleepover the following weekend. I'm having some trouble decorating certain parts of the house so maybe I'll share photos and ask for some input from y'all. Here's to a fun-filled  (and productive!) weekend! xo

PS; My "dream" shoes came back in stock yesterday and I was ready to snag them up in an instant, but once I started looking through the customer review photos I wasn't sure if I could make them work. I wonder if they'll still look like pencils when they're being worn? What do you think? They look like the best things ever, but I don't want to spend the cash if they'd look silly! I need y'all to help!

// Boy Scouts Want To Know How Adult Members Feel About This Whole Gay Thing. Here's the issue with this "survey" sent out by BSA: when you take their current rules into consideration, only adult heterosexual men will be filling it out. Only they get a say, and that isn't fair. What about the could-be lesbian den mother, or the transgendered child who only wishes to be included? It's sad that the Boy Scouts have a platform where they could promote universal acceptance, but instead choose not to. I would love for Toby to have the opportunity to learn the skills that BSA teaches, but I could never allow him to do so in such an intolerant environment.
