Summer Colds

Today's scheduled blog post has been moved due to scheduling (it's a tutorial) and I can't even gather the strength to write another "real" one haha I am sick. And I'm a big baby when I'm sick. This summer cold thing has started to get worse and worse with each passing hour and I'm going through boxes of tissue like it ain't no thanggggg. While I have plenty of work to do and places to go (and wedding invites to go proof!), I just want to lay on the couch, finish Gossip Girl season 5, and sleep.

I'm trying to put on my big girl britches for today so I'm asking you: What are your inconveniently sick remedies? Or even time wasters? Do you rely on chicken noodle soup (I hate it) or some kind of homeopathic honey mixture? Gimmie all you got! I am not a fan of this :)

Tomorrow I'll have a real post for you. Promise. ;)

  2. My go to: hot tea ( your choice), and some type of white liquor ( i don't care much for brown alcohol). Just a splash or two...or four..LOL
It helps break up all that bad stuff in your nose and chest. and help you relax more. My mommy still will make me this every once and awhile.

  3. Hot tea with ginger, lemon and honey. It's delicious and helps you get better: the ginger is invigorating, the lemon is antiseptic, and the honey is good for your throat. And even if you don't have a sore throat, honey tastes nice so go for it ;)

    Get well soon!

By the way, this is the first time I comment on one of your posts, but I love your blog! :)

  4. When I'm sick, I drink lots of Theraflu. I make it according to directions, and then add some powered ginger and some honey.

Just make sure you don't get the night time ones if you don't want to knock out.

I hope you feel better soon!

  6. Sage tea with honey is my rescue beverage whenever I'm battling any kind of cold. The sage tea is disgusting so I put in loads of honey to make it drinkable. But it really does work. :) Also eat lots of liquorice cough drops, but I'm not sure if you have those over there? (they are widely available here in Europe)

  7. Try some good ol' tea. While it doesn't guarantee fixing your cold, it makes everything more bearable. I know the summer heat says otherwise. Wrap yourself in a blanket and give yourself some comfort too. Indulge a little for when your body isn't up to par.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Make yourself a "hot toddy". Steep a cup of your favorite tea. Add in a generous glug of whiskey and some honey to taste. Drink it down while it's hot and bundle yourself up in blankets. You will sweat like a whore in church but feel a lot better when you wake up! I hope it helps!

  9. Orange juice mixed with some sprite. (about 2 to 1 mix)
It's still delicious even with dulled taste buds, gives a good vitamin C kick, and I kind the fizziness can help with congestion (plus it won't create any phlegm...gross.)
Hope you feel better soon! It's no fun feeling off when the weather is gorgeous out.

  10. Oh no! I'm sorry you're feeling sick - this cold seems to be something getting passed around here. Landon has it & he NEVER gets sick!

I'm a big baby too when I am sick... I don't have any "get well" remedies, but I will confess that I use my sickness as an excuse to get away with watching trashy tv & sleeping aaaaaall day (like 22 out of 24 hours lol). I cry to my mom until she comes over & makes me chicken soup (no shame) and I eat a lot of applesauce. As far as time wasters... if you have the energy to sit up, paint-by-numbers are surprisingly fun & relaxing - and you can do them while you watch the aforementioned trashy tv, hehe.

  14. Last time I was sick, I drank a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (the braggs variety) with a cup of water, 2 or 3 times a day. It seemed to help clear at the grossness in my chest.

  15. If your throat gets gnarly, gargle with warm salt water a few times a day, then drink honey and lemon tea. Aside from that, Nyquil and sleep. I hope you feel better soon!

  21. Emergen-C is my lifesaver. I work on political campaigns where I can't afford to get sick and if I do, I have to work through it (working while having a fever? No bueno). I took Emergen-C every day from July 2011 until Election Day and I didn't get sick until New Year's Eve. It's not the best tasting but mix it with Orange Juice.

  23. If you can force yourself to eat raw garlic cloves, they really help your immune system. It burns and is terrible, but it's great for you. Kombucha, echinacea, and vitamin C are all also super reliable!
I'm also a huge proponent of just taking it easy. It's so important to let your body rest when it needs it.

  24. I agree with the apple cider vinegar suggestion by Tyelar! You can even add a capful to a bowl of steaming water and breath it in. It helps to get rid of mucus.

  36. Sorry to hear about you being sick! I hardly ever take medicine or anything. I literally just sleep when I'm sick. I'll go out of my way to sleep for several days and I'm better in no time! Get a few books or sit in front of the TV and just REST REST REST. I'm hardly ever sick and when I am it never lasts longer than a few days.

  40. lemon, ginger, honey water: in the bottom of a mug add sliced up fresh ginger, a generous slice of lemon, and a teaspoon of honey- pour boiling water over this and let it cool until drink-able. I drink a ton of this when I'm sick, along with plenty of water, and maybe a little whiskey every now and then (warmed up is good, with a little honey).

Buy yourself some magazines, maybe watch a guilty movie or two- hope you feel better soon!

  45. Oh man, I had my first summer cold EVER this year and it knocked. me. OUT.

Theraflu. Or Hot Toddy, if you can stand to drink something warm.

Another thing actors do is with a cup of hot water, squeeze in half a lemon and as much honey as you can stand and drink that...I've seen actors rely on it for YEARS and it works!

I stopped taking DayQuil and NyQuil after I mixed them up one day. Took NyQuil right before school and it was the worst day ever! DayQuil also makes me spacey during the day. All I do, is sleep. Your body can't heal when you're awake. Lots of water, nettle(?) pot, and sleep!

  49. I like to cuddle in my bed and drink any herbal tea, or even Mint tea works. I cuddle in my bed, wrap myself with a blanket and watch some TV series I'm behind in. Lately (because I was just sick last week) it's been Modern Family and Criminal Minds. These are the best times wasters, in my opinion. Get well Kaelah!

  50. Hope you get better, dear! When I have a cold, I am bad about not resting, but at some point you just can't go anymore! At that point, I like to sleep a lot and drink a lot...water and juice, not alcohol. haha. I'm not big on medicine, especially the kind that makes me drowsy, but there are times when I go ahead and take some because I just can't take it anymore.

  51. I'm sorry you're out for the time, being sick in the Summer is the worst!

I'm currently in bed, recovering from two biopsies gone awry. The dr popped a blood vessel so I have hemostasis. ughhh.

I can't give you anymore advice Dr. Google wno't give, but I've watched Mean Girls, The Devil Wears Prada, Confessions of a Shopalic are great movies so far when you're sick. Those terrible romcom's are great, too. I hope you're feeling better .

  52. I've just started following your blog and conveniently you now have a cold... Excuses, excuses! (joke joke joke!). I'm British so for me it's a bacon sandwich and a good hot cup of tea (made by someone else obviously!). I think that may be a typical British answer too. But in general, put your feet up, rest and catch up on some good tv. Oh and eat lots of chocolate. I hope you feel better soon! xx

  53. I'm sorry you've got a summer cold!! That sucks, I hope you feel better very soon! :)

It's really annoying, but I definitely sweat a cold out. I layer up in sweats, a hoodie, and several blankets. I let me nose run and feel hot to the point where it's slightly uncomfortable. The next day I usually feel almost as good as new! It sucks though, just warning!

  54. You poor thing.....
STOP reading blog posts right now. Find a sunny spot with a warm blankie, have some hot tea and daydream/doze the afternoon away!
Also...this sounds really weird, but put a little bit of Olive oil on the soles of your feet, and then some sliced garlic. You should put old socks on to keep the garlic there.... you will be AMAZED at the amount of toxins teh garlic will draw out of your feet!
    I promise you...

Now rest up sweet pea, love from Down Under xx

  55. Long time reader (several years), not as frequently a commenter--

I would suggest a LOT of vitamin C. Robitussin or something similar could work in terms of over the counter medication. When I absolutely HAVE to go to work or take exams no matter how sick I am with a cold, I take Robitussin. It's not glamorous or homemade or anything special but it gets the job done for me. (I live in the Northeast USA, have an already demanding early academic career, and I have a not great immune system so I get my share of colds but I also simply cannot afford to miss work or school... so cold meds are something I have to sometimes use during winter and I never miss deadlines).

In all honesty though-- I think you should spoil yourself by buying yourself a present just for you AND take as much time off as you can/want. You work really hard and rock so I think you deserve some pampering (especially if you are not feeling well). I'm not sure how you feel about baths but I actually just scored a body wash at the grocery store by Softsoap (again not a glamorous brand) that has vitamin C in it... It lathers up into bubbles really well and has a lovely scent! Maybe a vitamin C bath would provide some comfort and also be calming?

Thinking of you, hoping you feel better soon. Being sick is zero fun.

  57. Ever since I was in competitive theatre in highschool I tend to pile on the EmergenC (vitamin c product) at least 2 packets a day when I'm sick. I also just tend to drink lots of tea with lemon, and water. Feel better darlin'! I love trashy tv when I'm sick!!

  58. I like lavender tea. It's one of the few things that doesn't taste gross when I'm sick (weirdly, I think it tastes a little like soap, which sounds gross but somehow it isn't). It's also a pretty good sleep aid if you're avoiding something with more of a kick.

    Feel better.

  61. wow I can save you Kaelah! If you're not opposed to drugstore remedies, I WILL NOT ever be without this when I am sick with a cold, EVER! Zicam COngestion Relief. you can get it at any super market, but it looks like this: http://tinyurl.com/d5ba36y
AMAZING stuff. Just squirt it up your nose, lay back for five minutes or so,and you're clear as a bell. Sleeping through the night is no problem, and I go all day without having to blow my nose. It feels like my cold is totally gone!
    best ever.

    sorry about the novel!

  62. I've come down with a cold again (second time in 3 weeks!!) so am upping my green tea tablets, vit c and fish oils. Taking dimetapp and codral and some prescription pills coz they're the back-up when others dont work.

Rest up, as hard as it is to do, rushing around and continuing the daily grind does not give your body time to rest and heal. So relax and work from bed as much as you can, and take it a bit easier. Difficult with a toddler I imagine but try!

Snort salt water... it clears your nose so quick! Kills the nasty buggers up there that are fuelling your cold.

    Best of luck xx

  63. My remedy for cold (and thanks to a very sore throat, I'm drinking it right now!) is to chop a little bit of garlic and ginger root & boil it in about 2-3 dl (~1 cup?) of water for 5 minutes. Pour the tea into a mug, add a teaspoon of honey and enjoy. Works every time, and it tastes good, too :)

    Hope you'll feel better soon!

  64. Kaelah- Ok besides plenty of sleep, vitamin c, chocolate, and lots of rest, I want to make you laugh. When I'm sick, I watch Jurassic Park. Yup, the movies with the dinosaurs including the awesome T-Rex. Why? Because it makes you feel better. There's no dinosaurs chasing you, so you can't be doing worse than those people! haha

If you didn't laugh at that-I at least hope you were amused!
    Feel better lovely!

I hope you get well soon and Gossip Girl is always a good choice :)

  66. To add to what someone said up there, it's pretty gnarly but garlic is magic...one time when I had a ridiculous cold and I went to this juice place that has a blend called "High Immune Tonic." I ordered it and the guy warned me that it was "pretty powerful," but I felt like total crapola so I was desperate. By "powerful" I think he meant "whole bulb of garlic and ton of ginger"- it was seriously spicy and not in the yum way. But I felt SO much better the next day! Now whenever I feel something coming on (or arrive) I make myself an approximation of that juice at home and choke it down. Worth a shot if you can take it!

  67. I swear by Oil of Oregano! I had a nasty cold/sore throat develop over the weekend and I was waiting for a new bottle to come that I ordered last week...finally delivered on Monday...a few drops under the tongue, let it sit for as long as you can handle (it burns!) then take a sip of water and swish and gargle, I did this a few times on Monday...woke up Tuesday feeling 100%...might just be all in my head but it never fails me :)
