Guilty Pleasures

I thought it'd be fun to do a Music Monday post on some of my favorite Guilty Pleasures. I've done this once before, maybe a few years ago, but I'm in the mood for some nostalgic tunes! I haven't done a real Music Monday post in forever, but quality over quantity, I say! Enjoy!

Destiny's Child - The Writing's On The Wall
This is when they were good... back when there were 4 of them (with the 2 original members). I can always jam out to "Say my name" "Bugaboo" and "Bills, Bills, Bills." Seriously. This will always be one of my favorites.
N*sync - No Strings Attached
My mom took me to a ton of concerts growing up. I was lucky enough that she valued that special time with me, even if she wasn't crazy about the boy bands and "All That Music and More" festivals. I remember seeing N*sync at the Ryman Auditorium here in Nashville and it was such a fun time. There's something about this album that I love... If I think about it I'm transported back to my Nana's house listening to it non-stop during the summer. (By the way, how terrible is their name?!)

New Found Glory - Sticks and Stones
Much to Mike's disappointment I could listen to this album non-stop for two weeks straight. I don't know what it is about this album, but the pop-punk lover in me is totally won over. My mom took me to see Blink 182 when I was a freshman in high school (ha!) and NFG opened for them (along with Midtown. OMG.) Definitely one of my favorite concerts!
Taking Back Sunday - Tell All Your Friends
Nothing sums up 16 year old me quite like Taking Back Sunday. I remember riding in the car with Shannon, music on full blast, windows down, and having the time of our lives. If I ever need to feel like I'm a teenager again, this is one of my go-to albums for sure.
TBS by kaelah bee on Grooveshark
Something Corporate - North
I love Andrew McMahon and I love everything he's done post-SoCo, but not even The Glass Passenger from Jack's Mannequin can rival the feeling of being 17 and falling asleep to this album every night. "Hurricane" "Down" and "Space" are just a few of my favorites. Plus I've always had a soft spot for the collage album art. Pretty sure my life would be made if SoCo reunited for a tour or seven!
soco by kaelah bee on Grooveshark

Mae - Destination : Beautiful and The Everglow
Another teenage favorite. Between Mae, Daphne Loves Derby, and Cute Is What We Aim For, I couldn't get enough of the alternative pop. These two albums comprise some of my all time favorite songs ever, such as "All Deliberate Speed", "Mistakes We Knew We Were Making" and "The Ocean". Mae definitely has an "emo" quality about their music, but it was always so beautiful. I still listen to it in the car on the way to and from work.
Mae DB by kaelah bee on Grooveshark

Britney Spears - Blackout
Few things need to even be said about this one... Britney is boss and I don't care who knows it. So many people were not into this album but it'll always be my favorite from here. There's just so much energy and excitement. If you see me pull up next to you in my Xterra, window down, belting out to "Radar," just think nothing of it :)
britney by kaelah bee on Grooveshark
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell
I remember buying this album in Hollister while in high school, and listening to it non-stop for the longest time. I still love turning on "Maps" and "Date with the night." I never got the same feeling from their follow-up albums, Show Your Bones and It's Blitz! but they're still a favorite.

What are some of your musical guilty pleasures?

  1. Mariah Carey for sure haha! I remember my "punk" friend looking at my iPod and freaking out that I had Mariah Carey on there. I'm just like, so what? I like the music and that's all that matters!

  5. The RHPS album - put it on repeat and sing it all day & night long! :)

Also, if we're talking about guilty 90s music: BBMak, S Club 7, Hanson, Macy's Playground, Hootie & the Blowfish, Spice Girls, Alanis Morisette, Backstreet Boys, Shaggy, SWV, Usher, Lauryn Hill, All Saints, Ace of Base, Ricky Martin and, of course, that stupid "Macarena" song :)

  7. Oh my gosh, it made me ridiculously happy to see SoCo's North on here. Andrew's music has gotten me through so many hard times, and I will always have a soft spot for anything he does.

  10. Bills Bills Bills, those were the good old days.I always wonder about those other two Destiny's Child girls. I wonder if they are super pissed every time they see Beyonce or if they are ok with her success. I wonder how I would be in that situation. haha

  11. oh my goodness - YES! Nysnc and destiny's child. haha. love this!

  12. Seriously, I am totally dancing around right now. When I showed my other half this page he pointed out that this could have been written by me!
My personal guilty pleasures are pretty much identical! My additions would be Finch, Green Day, The Early November, Fall Out Boy, Kelly Clarkson, Dream (I loved 'He loves you not' sooo much!)TLC, P!nk ('Don't let me get me' was my anthem, you know?), All Saints and I think that's it!

  14. OH.GIRL. Britney, Destiny's Child, N'sync...we have those in common. I also have a huge love for Jock Jams, mainly the first 3 editions. I used to spend hours in my driveway with Jock Jams and my Skip-It. Good times...good times.

  16. Ahhh! TBS! That is my best friend & I's soundtrack! So many days after school got out with us driving around causing chaos singing at the top of our lungs in her station wagon, sigh! Interesting tid bit Adam Lazzara and I went to the same high school- granted he dropped out (i think?!) about 4-5 years before I went there, but still. (And my brother's band was going to be sponsored by TBS before they broke up)

    ReplyDelete
  17. In fact, I was just listening to Take That - so that might be one of my musical guilty pleasures.
However, you're totally right with Destiny's Child. They were so great back then.

    ReplyDelete
  18. OMG look at Beyonce! bringing back memories! <3'd N*Sync - bet I could still remember all the words, for sure! New Found , Good Charlotte and Blink 182 too... and Usher, 8701!

  19. HAHAHA oh god, I loved that N'Sync album when it came out. I'm blushing just writing this but my friends and I totally wrote N'Sync fan fiction...in notebooks, not online, thank jesus. I hope it still isn't out there somewhere.

    1. Oh my goodness....if you wrote a blog about N'Sync fan fiction, I would be your first reader!

Those were my boys and I thought that I was going to marry Lance Bass. Let's just say, I was a bit surprised when he came out. Devastated me.

  20. Something Corporate will always and forever be my favorite. They take me back to a time in my life where I was happy and I can't help but smile whenever I hear As You Sleep.

    ReplyDelete
  21. haha, i was at that same blink 182 concert and thank goodness my parents didn't bring me, because they would have made me leave!
i love that nsync album too. i still keep it in my car, my husband hates it!

    ReplyDelete
  22. *NSYNC - first and foremost, Christina Aguilera, P!nk, New Found Glory (the older stuff is definitely the best), Good Charlotte, The Ataris. I got into Something Corporate eventually, a little bit of Rufio, Destiny's Child, Blink 182, i think Blackout by Britney was one of her best overall albums too.

I'm definitely a pop music lover!

  23. For whatever reason I was obsessed with Will Smith's 'Rap' CD's in middle school (I thought that listening to them made me gangster).

I found the CD's at my mom's over Christmas and uploaded them to my IPOD. I know sing 'Getting Jiggy Wit It' on my morning run.

Na na na na na na na. Na na na na na na na. Getting Jiggy Wit it.

  24. These are all so good! I heard Vanessa Carlton on the radio the other day, and it reminded me of our drives.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ha, I couldn't help but laugh when I saw the Destiny's Child pic in my dashboard.
I was driving home about 2-3 days ago and "Mmm bop" came on. I laughed so hard. What the heck were they saying in between "mmm bop"?!

I have a 90's pop station on the Jango app on my phone and it really takes me back.

Right now my guilty pleasure is "Give Your Heart a Break" by Demi Lovato. I'm sure I give all the other drivers a show when I'm dancing to it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've seen a few shows at the Ryman, and it's probably my favorite venue that I've been to. Such a good vibe from that place! And the church pews totally pull on my Southern girl heartstrings.

  27. NFG was MY BAND when I was 14/15. I was in love with THAT album. I could still listen to that cd on repeat for days on end. Also, taking back sunday? Does it get much better? I used to (still do) SCREAM those songs. How passionate was their singer? or depressed lol.

& Something Corporate was another obsession of mine. I could listen to/watch the video for SPACE forevvvver. I was in love with the lead singer.

My other guilty pleasures? Blink 182 (every album). The Format (they are still the love of my life). Sugar Cult, I can't think of the album name (but it had bouncing off the walls again).
    HOT HOT HEAT, bandages!
Saves the day -- anywhere with you
    Lit-- my own worst enemy

ok, ok, I'll stop. My pop-punk love runs deeeep tho. ;)

  28. Taking Back Sunday!!! <3
They're not a guilty pleasure, this album is a classic :)
I love the title track so much! There is an acoustic version on one of these Punk Goes Acoustic samplers, that I listened to for weeks back then.
Thanks for this post, so great! :)

  29. Nfg is definitely my favorite band. I approve<3

  30. I agree with every single one of these. I can't let go to any of these albums even if the frequency that I listen to them has decreased. I was lucky enough to see Something Corporate on their reunited tour which was incredible. :) And I still really love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, give It's Blitz another try!

    ReplyDelete
  31. oh my god are we the same person? except i was always a backstreet boys fan personallyy :]

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree totally with you on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs albums! Although Gold Lion is a standout for the following albumns, the later 2 don't even touch Fever to Tell! I remember seeing them live for this album and completely losing my too-cool-to-care shit hahahaaa!

  33. I was a little to 'Alternative' to listen to most of this when I was younger, when I thought I was way to cool to listen to mainstream music. But I still love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs unabashedly. <3

  34. "Nothing sums up 16 year old me quite like Taking Back Sunday". This so much. Oh my God.

Although I have been on a major TBS kick over the past couple of months. Listen to them almost every day, in fact. I guess I'm hankering after 16 year old Becky.

I actually met Adam Lazzara in September. He has a massive head. By which I literally mean, his head is huge compared to everybody else's. Once you see it, you'll never unsee it...

  35. Yes!!! You like Mae! They are one of my top 5 bands and their album, The Everglow, is SO COOL. You just won about 5 million Cool Points with me!!! I love this post.

    ReplyDelete
  36. This blog post is basically my middle school and high school self in a nutshell. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. LOL! I love the mix up of music here - that's how I am! I still love me some Destiny's Child. And my biggest musical guilty pleasure would have to be New Kids on the Block. (And I have no shame admitting I've been to two of their reunion concerts, met Donnie, and stood there like an awe-struken fangirl.)

    ReplyDelete
  38. New Found Glory. Haaa. I'm having an 8th grade moment hearing that. I've been on this page way to long being nostalgic over that album. Really amusing. Thanks for reminding me of the good times and the soundtrack to junior high.

    ReplyDelete
  39. this is so funny because i've been listening to a Something Corporate Pandora station and every song that comes on from Blink 182 to Taking Back Sunday I squeal with excitement. It's like a time machine back to my 16 year old self.

  40. Guilty pleasures: Tom Jones, Kanye West, the Get Up Kids and Dolly Parton :)

  43. Is it weird that i was planning something similiar on my blog this Friday? Mostly because my gym has been cranking out my "secret shame" music (Justin Timberlake circa 2004-2006 anyone?) this week! So you know...come on over on Friday (your Thursday) and revel in my guilty pleasures ('Yonce will be making an appearance as well)

    ReplyDelete
  44. This is why I Just adore you!!! We loved the same exact music when we were younger!!!

One of my best memories was on friday when I would get paid I would always take my younger brother out to dinner and we always ended up in the grocery story buying ice-cream and we would sing and dance Nsync in the aisles and not care if people were watching/listening/laughing at us :-) So many good memories

    ReplyDelete
  45. Weird, we have the exact same feelings on Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Taking Back Sunday is still my most-seen-live band (not counting my boyfriend's bands), though I really loved Brand New, they just didn't play in England very often.

    ReplyDelete
  46. ah! so many of these bring me back to my high school years and i am in love! thanks for the refresher to some good music! love your blog : )

    ReplyDelete
  47. Tell All Your Friends is still an amazing album!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I pretty much love everything about Andrew McMahon! I got to meet him at Warped Tour last year and was so nervous that I froze up and sounded really awkward. At least I got a picture though! But I actually started listening to Jack's Mannequin first then discovered Something Corporate. I have so many memories tied to all of their songs. I think that SoCo had a reunion tour in 2010 but I didn't make it. They should definitely have another one though!

    ReplyDelete
  49. We pretty much have the same exact taste! Ha! I kept scrolling down, saying, "ah!" "ahhh!" "AHH!" So great. I recently made a "guilty pleasure jamz" on Spotify. It's quite lovely!

    ReplyDelete
  50. NFG, TBS and Midtown - you just brought back a flood of memories with this post!!! I love all those bands and saw each live in concert too... some a few times. I have to say they would totally all be a guilty pleasure of mine even still today.

    ReplyDelete
  51. oh how i LOVED destiny's child....loved/love....same difference.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ohhhhhhh man that Yeah Yeah Yeahs album had some heavy heavy repeat for me in high school. It sorta marked the year that I started branching out with style and music and doing my "own thing" (as much as it can be "your own thing" when you're 17)...basically it was the soundtrack to a really fun time in my life.

I also LOVED TLC's Crazy Sexy Cool. 4ever.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ahh love this! This is so funny, I've really been craving nostalgia tunes lately. Perhaps it's the changing seasons?
I feel like whenever you hear Say My Name you must do the "pose-then-freeze!" moves from the video clip. You must!
And TBS, hello my teen years!

  55. My parents took my sister and I to an nsync concert too! hilarious! Also, I think Konstantine by Something Corporate was one of my most listened to songs in high school and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are still one one of my favorite bands. (I LOVE Show Your Bones!)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Aiyaiyai! The Yeah Yeah Yeah's are NOT guilty pleasure music... they're EPIC!

And I've never given a second thought about Nsync's name... but LORD thats cheesy!

  57. MAE is STILL one of my very favorites! I am completely in love with "This time is the last time" and "we're so far away". I photographed a wedding recently where the bride walked down the aisle to an acoustic "The Ocean" and needless to say, I WAILED. Totally lost it as she was walking down the aisle. Couldn't see through my viewfinder at all. Thankfully they turned out well ;)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hah! These are all so funny!! I have a serious New Found Glory obsession that stems from back in the day. Did you ever listen to Liveonrelease? I loved them, too - such a cool all-girl band. :) Fun stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ah! This list pretty much sums up my childhood and teenage years :) Although they're a must for any ipod and party playlist.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Yes yes YES! I went to a '90s burlesque show over the weekend and they played so much NSYNC and BSB (and had guys dressed up as them doing ongoing rivals). It was one hell of an awesome flashback and so is all of this. Good stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Oh my gosh, Radar, YES! I have a mix cd in my car of Britney, Ke$ha, and Gaga, my own personal Holy Guilty Trinity, and Radar is track 3. Yes, I do know the tracks by heart, and I will belt out all of them.f

    ReplyDelete
  62. TBS, SOCO and MAE were amongst my favourites too and I still listen to them often!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Love your guilty pleasures list. Just so you know, Adam Lazzara from Taking Back Sunday went to my high school (Southwest Guilford High in High Point, NC) while I was there in my freshman year. I knew his brother quite personally, he worked at Planet Hardware. Really cool individuals!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Actually everything you posted is my guilty pleasure! I love the fact that my mom wasn't the only one sitting through NSYNC concerts and sneaking me cameras into Blink 182 concerts when I was a Freshman in high school, Jimmy Eat World opened for them and it was a double headliner with Green Day!

    ReplyDelete
  65. oh... Taking Back Sunday! The memories that come rushing back.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I went to go see Taking Back Sunday at an outside venue by the ocean and it started to storm like crazy. They had to cancel the concert since it was lightning and we were right by the water. Totally sad. D:
But I saw them a few months later, haha.
My best friend and I still jam to them in her punch buggy.
