Shark Week 2011

If you've been reading my blog for a while then you may already be well aware of my fascination with all things shark related. Everything. I live, breathe, and sleep sharks. My life goal is to free dive with a Great White (after many many many cage diving experiences, of course!). Some people get excited for Harry Potter (or did, I should say), Twilight or maybe even the newest Judd Apatow film... but me... I get excited for Shark Week. I have all of the DVDs, books, and even a collection of plush sharks to commemorate the annual event. Last year we rushed to move into our new place and had cable installed the day of Shark Week's premier so we wouldn't miss it.

Last year's Shark Week set up!

My love for sharks doesn't stop at the jaw-dropping entertainment on Discovery. Instead of just watching the shows or learning about them, we should also make a conscious effort to help keep them alive. With overfishing, finning, and sport, Great Whites are now more endangered than tigers! That's kind of huge. The population of white sharks have dropped 90% in the last 2 decades. Since I've been alive! To think that I may not have the chance to educate my children on the incredible creature that lives in our oceans is a horrifying thought. Sharks have been around for 400 million years! And we're managing to wipe them out without a second thought. With the booming popularity of Shark Week, other shows have made a break in mainstream media such as Expedition Great White. These shows help educate the general public that white sharks don't eat people for fun. They're actually very very intelligent creatures. We all need to do our part to help.

Whether it's donating money to a conservation organization, adopting a shark of your own, or signing a petition to help stop shark finning, we can do so much with so little. (Sharks aren't the only sea creatures that need our help. Please check out the above links and do what you can to help save our waters!)

Tonight we're throwing a Shark Week party. Shark and ocean themed food and drink. Balloons, decorations, and some Andy Samberg. Hopefully our guests will finally be able to see just how passionate I am about these mysterious but magical creatures! (And I have a petition here for all of the guests to sign, too!)

I urge you all to check out Shark Week, check out various resources around the web, and to get involved! (and swing by our party if you're in Nashville!) Happy Shark Week!

PS; Here's my shark infographic from my final semester of college! I can't seem to find the version where all of the typos are fixed so you'll have to make due with this one! (Click to view it larger!)

  2. love the plushies :)
i think Shark Week screens a little later here in New Zealand but i always set MkSky to record every episode even when i am watching them!
as a diver, i have seen the decline in the shark population. we are always so very very lucky to see them in the water. some of my friends have been in a cage and seen the large great whites we get off the South Island. i too would love to see them in their natural habitat as we are just not going to have that chance for much longer.
    enjoy Shark Week!!

  3. Hey, lovely lady! I've been watching shark week since I was little. I'm absolutely in love with it, and right now the shows from last year are on too! I'm in Las Vegas, so I don't know if they're playing them there too... but I thought I'd let you know. Hammerheads are my favorite. They have a place here where you can pet nurse sharks and stuff. It's pretty awesome! You should also check out the Monteray Bay Aquarium. They always have Great Whites. They're the only aquarium that has been able to raise them to adulthood in captivity.

  8. You are so adorable. But sriously, it's great that you are so concerned with shark conservation...more of us should be mindful of how we are dealing with the earth. O you know why their rates have gone own so much? Are people killing them unnecessarily?

  15. DO you GET GLUE? They have some great stickers for Shark Week and since you are such a lover thought I would mention it.

If you don't know get glue, it is a fun website where you can "check-in" to tv shows, movies, etc that you are into. You earn stickers and then they send them to you FOR FREE. Who doesn't like free, right?

    Have fun with shark week!!!

  16. Sharks are awesome, in both colloquial and classic senses of the word. My uncle loved them, he got really quiet around them and fascinated at aquariums. It made me appreciate them as an incredibly majestic creature :'B

  20. I am giggling to myself because I JUST commented on another blog: "Okay, I'm gonna have to check out Shark Week because I am so dang curious!" Hahaha. Admittedly, I'm not into nature shows at all, but there has to be a reason for all this Shark Week hype. I'm determined to find out!

Those stuffed animals are too cute.

  21. they're fascinating mammals, it's not celebrated a lot in the UK, but every now and again you get such a good documentary on them!

  27. Loving that infographic!
Sharks are some of my favorite animals too!
It's SO great all the awareness that Shark Week brings to sharks and their declining population, I wish it would last all year :(
I've actually been cage diving w/ sharks on Oahu's North Shore, was a great experience! Definitely was in awe when you're in the water with an animal so large and powerful. Living close to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I've been lucky enough to see the 5 juvenile Great Whites they've had in captivity. They should be catching another in Southern CA this summer to be on display in the fall/early winter, excited for that! I LOVE Sharks!
Happy Shark Week Kaelah, so far so good! Watching it now!
