Loft Tour: KB's Wardrobe

Two weeks ago I shared a little tour of my workspace! It's definitely where I spend most of my time at home. However, there is a space in our little home that I love most of all. My wardrobe. When we moved into our loft we were sort of bummed about the lack of storage space (read: no closet). The gal who lived here before us had fashioned a few rickity shelves in the laundry room (which we use as a pantry/craft storage), but they weren't really useful. We have a huge white brick wall running the length of our loft and not enough furniture to put there so there was a huge area that just looked oddly open. That's when my step-dad suggested we hang chain from the rafters and make a swaying wardrobe. Genius! Mike and I high-tailed it straight to Lowe's to purchase industrial strength chain and 1" pipe. It was a labor of love but I couldn't be happier! Not only do I get a fully functional (and huge!) "closet", but it also serves as a decorative feature with all of the colors and patterns. The chains and pipe fit the industrial feel of our home, but the clothing fits my personality. The perfect combination! (Also, I'm totally one of those girls that If I can't see it, I won't wear it. So this works out so nicely!)

The white storage cubes are from Walmart. The tall ones are 2 of the 3-cubby stacking shelves (8 total), and the shoe racks at the bottom are just that. (The horizontal shelves tend to buckle in the middle though! As you can see, I'm sure!). I love being able to display my little collection of clothing in our home because it's definitely a collection I've worked at accumulating over the years. Since I only own dresses and cardigans/jackets, they fit really well. My belts are in the bathroom and my tights are in a drawer. Win/win! I think the swaying wardrobe was such a genius idea and it's almost my dream closet! It's a piece of this loft that I will want to take with me to absolutely every new home we have (but it'll probably be impossible.) I'm just going to enjoy it for as long as possible!

You'll be able to see more photos on Moorea's blog next week! Thanks for stopping by my space!

How do you store/organize your clothing? Are you a "all items turned one way, in a certain order" kinda gal? I am!

  5. Your closet is amazing! My closet is very organized. All my dresses on one side, in color order (red, orange, yellow, etc) with black in the front. The other side is shirts in the same way, with tank tops in the front so they don't get lost. :)

  6. I love the idea of a saying closet and it looks amazing against the white brick wall! I am a little bit OCD in my closet as well, all color coordinated and sectioned by type of garment! Clean is better in my opinion!

  8. Wow, I wish I had the space to do something like this! Since I moved back in with my parents until me and the boy can afford to renovate our new-to-us house, I'm living in a box. Literally. All I have for my clothes/shoes/accessories is two canvas wardrobes, one with a rail, the other with shelves. I can't wait to move into my new home and have a pretty closet!

Seriously though, it looks amazing. All those dresses and shoes? Heaven!!

  10. I love this idea. I love the little glimpses into your apartment, too. It's the perfect way to store all your clothing-- and for sure, it is a collection!! You should show it off!:) Drooled a little over your shoes. Actually, a lot.

    Have a great weekend!

  13. Your closet is to die for! I love how pleasing the layout is too. Definitely more like home decor than clothing storage.

As for me, I am totally the type of person that organizes all similar clothes together then within each section everything is organized by color and everything has to face the same way. I'm such a perfectionist sometimes.

  14. ughhhh you're closet is so amazing it's not even FAIR! living in NYC I'm lucky if I have a single closet per room...I have clothes everywhere! Including a garment rack at my parents in New ENgland. Someday I wish to have one as greatly organized as this, and all in one place!

Your shoe cubbies/display are gorgeous! :)

  20. Love your closet! But I do have a question - Are your dogs not into shoes? I can't store my shoes on or close to the floor because my dog would have a chew fest!

    ReplyDelete
  21. @ MeggieJ: Nope! I'm very very very lucky in that regard! G used to love shoes when she was a pup, but she grew out of it. Pip never cared for them! We keep their puppy play basket well stocked for this reason! haha

  22. i am green with envy! this is freaking AWESOME!

i like my clothes color coordinated, but the lack of closet space doesn't really allow it... one day, my dreams of colorful tisy bliss will come true :)

  25. Your closet is totally awesome. =] I'm definitely a "all things hang the same way" type of girl. I also organize by long sleeves, short sleeves, tank tops, dresses, skirts.

  26. This is so great! Way to be organized and practical :) I would love to have my wardrobe out in the open like this. It would make things so much easier!

  27. If you want your tall boots to stand up straight...throw some empty wine bottles in them!

  28. This is awesome, and perfect for you guys, since your style is such a part of your life.
I've had to commandeer a room in my house to create and office/closet because the tiny closet for our bedroom is just big enough for my husband's clothes. I've gone a similar route with just getting almost everything out in the open so it's part of the decor and so I'll see it daily.

  29. I love you closet idea! when I finally get a larger space that I can customize, I'll have to keep some of your strategies in mind. I'm definitely a more visual girl, so if I don't see it, I know I won't wear it!

  43. My dream is having a true dressing for my clothes but also for my man clothes... Our work space become a real one and it's very strange to work in a dressing !! We have a lot of dresses and shirts all around us... I mus do some photos one day !

  44. Commence a total drool.

I like to call myself organized, but I'm currently coveting your collection/organization. I keep my clothes bunched by type - sweaters, dresses, pants; and THEN by color. Gets tedious but makes things easier to find!

  45. What an amazing space and everything is so nicely organized. I think you have motivated me to go revamp my closet!!! Can't wait to see more photos. Maybe you should do a post on a few of your most cherished pieces.

  53. I am totally anal about my clothes. In fact, I was just discussing this with some people and posted a picture of it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/illumined_red/5985305240/in/photostream

I *have* to have my off-season clothes out of the way, I can't stand to have clothes I can't currently wear in my closet! So I switch things out when the weather starts to change.

I love your closet set up, it's lovely.

  55. this is such a great setup!

  57. What a wonderful way to store/display all of your clothes. I'm totally jealous.

    ReplyDelete
  58. i don't like my current closet, but i love yours. i definitely turn all hangers one way and try to color coordinate my clothes.
this closet looks really, really fun. i want to borrow all of your dresses...

    ReplyDelete
  59. I have about 5 or 6 dresses in my closet. everything else is my husbands . . he has 40 shirts lined up in there. (well a little more, i counted a couple weeks ago). I really don't have a lot of clothes and most of what I wear now is borrowed. I live out of a pair of shorts, a pair of jeans, and a few shirts each week and then those dresses I have. 3 of them need to be stitched up because they ripped. eek.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I love it, you have it organized so well that it looks like a store.

    ReplyDelete
  61. What an amazing closet! I love how everything is visible at a glance and that you are able to use your clothing as home decoration.

In my closet I have everything hanging in their own sections (dresses, tanks, t-shirts, skirts, and then business clothing) and within each section I have the clothing colour-coordinated. Within each section the clothing is in colour order and all of my clothing has to face the same way. I wish I could hang everything, but there simply is not enough room so I have two dressers and shelving for knits, jeans, workout wear, shorts, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  62. wow, this is amazing, i am immediatly doing this when i move out.
i was thinking about it, and i thought perhaps you could put a shelf up above the hanging bit, get some foam heads and display your wigs. just an diea if you hadnt thought of it already :)
also, words cannot describe how jealous i am of your dress collection. I am only up to 15 dresses, but it is a work in progress!.
