A Poor Man's Dorothy

First off, let me just say this: Holy cow! Y'all really blew me away in response to yesterday's post. Your comments were so eloquent, sincere, and wonderful. It's so great to know that even in our vulnerable/uncomfortable situations, we're never alone. It's literally going to take me weeks to get back to everyone but please know that I've already started working on it! Also know that I read absolutely every single comment (about three times each!) and I'm so proud to call this little slice of the internet mine! You humble me daily and I'm so glad you can be part of my journey!

Since today is Halloween (Happy Halloween, by the way!) I thought I'd post what I wore to work on Saturday night for our "costume contest". I don't really get too wrapped up in Halloween (I know... so boring of me!) and I didn't want to spend any money (Frugal McDoogal!), so I opted to take the Speedy Girl dress from this post and style it up like Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. I didn't want to DIY any glitter shoes so I just wore some red flats and braided my hair. Close enough right? I spent exactly ZERO cents. Win! Maybe I'll get crafty next year, but this year I was fine just cruisin' through! It was a successful night at work (for the most part. May or may not have had a verbal showdown with an incredibly insufferable gentleman) and I'm ready to be productive this week!

Yesterday was spent thrifting and fawning over a rescue/special needs puppy we have our heart set on. More on that at another time!

What are you dressing up as for Halloween? (Or what have you this weekend?) Did you do anything super fun and exciting for the ~holiday?!

Forever 21 cardigan

  2. I think you look super cute in that dress! And braided hair looks good on you, too! I'm also not too much into buying stuff for halloween and still don't know what to wear to a halloween party tonight. I still got a few hours to think fo something.. but I'll probably jus put on a black dress and paint my face black, whatever :)

  3. Goodness gracious Kaelah Bee - you look absolutely beautiful in this outfit post (even more so than your usual fabulousness!). The hair! The lips! The dress! Squee!

  5. I can't really get excited about Halloween here in Australia. It's just not big enough even if the stores are trying to sell it to us.

I think the big problem is that it's spring and it just doesn't sit right with the occasion of Halloween.

Ghosts and ghoulies don't want hay fever hehe!

I'm not a fan of dressing up unless what I buy can be used casually or for another occassion. I'd probably take the easy way out too with costumes!

  6. I try not to get to envolved in halloween. I don't like the fact that germany is adopting so many costums from the US...I am amarican and german...and I guess just because of this I just don't want to celebrate halloween in germany. When I was a kid people didn't even know what halloween was in Germany...and now...it's this "big thing". It's a weird thing. I've been going on and on about this on all kinds of halloween posts....I should just stop cmplaining about it ^^

    anywayz.....Girl...you rock red lipstick!!!!

  7. Aren't you just adorable?! :) I really love it when you pair black tights with those red flats. It always reminds me of a real modern day Minnie Mouse!

Seems like everyone has cool Halloween plans but I. I'm spending my day hanging out at home while my fiance is at work, then I have a job interview at Old Navy later at 5!
Have a good one, Ms. Kaelah. :)

  8. I actually *love* this costume, and just may have to use it for inspiration next year! We went to a Judy Garland musical Friday (my gf is obsessed with all things Judy), so I am totally loving this. :) So freaking cute!!

  9. Awww, I love it! You look so pretty and cute with the braids. Creative costume idea considering it was last minute. I did the same thing and used the clothes I had stuffed in my closet to be a teacher...haha.

  13. Oh man, your outfit is cute! (And free, yeah, that's always a plus!) But I don't like the Wizard of Oz! (Well, except the Cowardly Lion... because he's a cat, lol.)
I could never have your job because I'd just be so sure there'd be so many ridiculous men / women to deal with. Meh. :P
    Have an awesome Halloween!

  15. This is great! I love it when people can just pull an outfit out of their wardrobes. I'm rarely capable of such things and spend MONTHS thinking about/working on our costumes.

  16. I got a skeleton dress and tights. Just tried the tights on and they're the size of childrens' tights. They come up to my bum. Disaster! x

  17. This is adorable! I took the frugal route as well :) I used some leftover fake blood from last year, and styled myself up as a zombie. My fiance took part as well! We dressed in formal wear and took pictures as somewhat of a zombie engagement shoot :)

  18. I dressed up as Daria for my friend's Halloween shindig because I was in the same boat as you. I wanted something fast and cheap! Plus Daria is fantastic, so how could I not want to be her hilariously sarcastic self.

As for my actual Halloween plans, I'm just chillin at home with the boyfriend and handing out candy to all the kids. We just moved so I'm excited to meet new people!

  20. This is a nice lil costume to knock up though from things you already own. :D I personally love Halloween and it's slowly getting bigger in the UK, but nothing like it is for you guys! I spent one Halloween with my family in Canada when I was younger and it was the most amazing time.

  23. Perfect Dorothy costume! The Mister and I aren't dressing up though we both really like to. But we will be taking his nephew Trick-or-Treating and sneaking a few pieces out of his bag! (He's two so it's okay.)

  24. I love the Halloween atmosphere and scary movies make this cinema geek happy so I kind of celebrated and was inspired by Halloween all month!

However I did not get officially costumed but I had a last minute frugalista plan too that was similar to yours: snow white.

    Have a good week!!

  28. I love your frugal costume! Good job. :)

I was trying to spend as little money as possible this year as well; I actually considered being Dororthy and then realized I had all the appropriate clothing items to be Olive Oyl! I painted a red shirt with a little acrylic paint, sewed a yellow strip of fabric on a high-waisted black skirt, threw on some brown boots and pearl earrings, and voilà!

  36. im one of the few aussies that absolutely adores halloween. im a kindergarten assistant so for me its all about the joy of the children who have no idea about the "blah blah american takeover blah blah", kids just love to dress up...and heck i do too!
i went into work on the weekend and spent about 6 hours spookyfying our classroom and the looks on the kids faces made it all worth while.
i hand sewed my costume which i made with fabruc remnants so in the end it only cost me $10! http://leigh--leigh.tumblr.com/post/12159484832/my-tangleds-rapunzel-costume-for-halloween-at

  37. You need to wear your hair like that more, it looks so freakin' adorable. I feel like your Dorothy would be from some kind of rock opera version of the Wizard of Oz. Not like the Wiz or Wicked, like if the Who were turned loose on the Emerald City.

I loved your post yesterday. I am SO shy about commenting on people's blogs, and some of the reasons for that you mentioned. It made me feel like someone understands those that are painfully shy.

  38. aw kaelah you make the cutest dorothy! x

  39. I felt the same way this year! All of my close friends spent weeks working on homemade/DIY costumes, while I took a dress that I already owned, bought a sailor hat and some gold puffy paint and voila! haha I think i spend maybe $10.

    perfecto!

i just did a post about it on my blog here:

  45. Great job on a $0 costume!
A couple years ago i went as a doll - also for $0.
This year was a little more ambitious - going as famous paintings. I'm happy with how they turned out. You can see them here, if you like :

  47. My sister-in-law's birthday is on Halloween and she has always been very strict about it being HER day, so we celebrate her. She turned 25.

I love your dress and laughed at the "poor man's dorothy". You look lovely and not like a poor man's Dorothy at all!
