Confession: I'm Having an Affair

It's true. I am. I'm cheating with 3 brilliant works of art... 3 charming, endearing, wonderful creatures. Oh, I didn't mean I was cheating on Mike.... I meant I'm cheating on my ruffled black flats! Okay, okay, okay... so just two weeks ago I had to defend myself (twice) on why I chose to wear black flats every single day. I chose to wear them because they're comfortable! They're easy to walk in. My feet never tire. They match everything. Yeah, sure, I was tired of seeing them, too, but here's the thing... my feet are terrified of heels. Seriously. Terrified. I walk like a drunk penguin and everyone stares. I vowed to be a "flats girl forevz". Well the very next day Mike and I found ourselves in Target, perusing the aisles as usual, and I had a sudden inclination to go to the shoe section. This isn't unusual, of course. I look at the shoes every time we go. But this time felt different. I felt bold. I felt like trying something new.

What did I do? I picked up a pair of wedges that I most certainly never would've picked up in my life, and I put them on. What happened? I fell in love.

There's no denying the fact that under any other circumstances I would have scoffed at these shoes and said "Ha! Really? Never!" because they're quite obviously not my usual style. Even if I did go for heels, I went for ruffles and suede and pretty things. These looked too hard... too odd. They had a "clog" feel to them and if anyone hates clogs, it's this girl! At least, I used to... I think I still do? Oh bother... I have no idea what is happening to me! I'm being awfully over dramatic but this was a big deal for me. I don't like heels. And I certainly don't find them comfortable. Then I walked in them. I exclaimed to Mike "I bet I could jump rope in these!" and at that moment, I was sold. In the buggy (yes, buggy!) they went!

Well, I was inspired. Up and down the other aisles I ran. Then I found these. A strange orange brown, sure, but the heel and platform spoke to me. Sister shoe, I said, You're coming home with me! Into the buggy they flew!

Then I stumbled upon these. The chunky brown straps were something I was comfortable with, and I knew the wedge would make it easier to withstand. Mike was not sold, however, but I quickly talked him into giving them them benefit of a doubt and he obliged. They're the only ones I have yet to style up but I'm patiently awaiting the day!

My point with this post was to document a transformation in myself. Not only in my style, but also in my ability to open up to new things and just try them... even if they have failed me miserably in the past. I can't tell you how many pairs of heels I've bought and throw out or lost simply because they ended up being too uncomfortable. I'm willing to try things, sure. but I stand by my word that if they're far too uncomfortable I just will not wear them. I refuse to believe "fashion over function" or "fashion over comfort" and while you may disagree, that's totally okay! You can have all the uncomfortable shoes for yourself! I'm just excited that I found three cozy pairs in just one trip!

Another point I'd like to make with this post is that you should have an affair. Not by cheating on your significant other, but by branching out and trying something new! Maybe you'll fall in love with it! Hate brussel sprouts? Try them one more time... with an open mind. If you still hate them, don't eat them. But maybe you'll surprise yourself. We learn something new about ourselves all the time... Here I am at almost 23 years old and I just now realized that I like shoes. It's a whirlwind revelation for me, so you should try to learn something about yourself! Who knows? It might even change your life forever! (I may be pushing it with that one, but seriously! What do you have to lose?!)

If you should be loving anyone on Valentine's Day (and every day!), it should be yourself. So go out there, try something new or something you thought you hated. Have an open mind. Be willing to accept change! Sometimes it's fun!

  5. I only recently got into heels and platforms (except including a brief platform phase in high school). I think the quality of the shoe will have a big impact on how comfortable they are to walk in. I think if you can't walk well in heels, it is best to wear flats. the first two pairs are really fun.
I want to "cheat" on my wardrobe of girly dresses with more masculine, menswear inspired pieces.

  7. This post was AWESOME. Not only did it entail fashion, but the love for oneself. I love how you're able to bring so many things together and make them -- make sense! You rock. And yes, I agree with using the term "buggy" too, because...it IS a buggy! Haha. All three are lovely, but my favorite will have to be the middle child. Love that color.

  11. I'm so happy for you! I was one the people who asked you why black flats in every outfit, remember?
I love flats too, they're super cute and comfortable, I feel like I can walk miles in them and I want them in every color.
That's all I was saying, the flats weren't the problem BUT I'm pleased that you found those LOVELY shoes, man, they're ADORABLE.
I'm in love (seriously) with the mustard ones and chunky brown straps :)
Thank you for the advice. This blog have become my daily reading, I can learn so much of you.

  12. Oh wow, I love all three of these! They are amazing. In the past few months I have really come to love heels too - one of the best things about fashion blogging, is that it makes you branch out a bit style wise :)

On a side note... I wish we had Target in New Zealand. Ugh.

  15. Hi Kaelah!

I happened upon your blog and have spent the last 2 hours reading through at least the last two months of posts. I want to say that I love it. It isn't always what you write about that I love (though you do have the most adorable outfits, and I adore your photography). What makes me love your blog is that you seem like such a positive and kind person. It comes across in everything that you write and talk about, and I find it so refreshing. So often I come across blogs where the girls seem so cold and icy, while you seem so warm and open and like you truly enjoy life.

    So thank you for that.

P.S. I never would have guessed you are only in your early 20s by the way you write. You have wisdom and maturity beyond your years. That is a good thing.

I have followed you and I look forward to reading more of what you have to write, post and say.

  18. You go girl!

I didn't wear heels for years because they made me tower over my boy. But then I realised - Why does that matter? Why should I refrain from wearing gorgeous shoes just so that I fit the traditional boy-taller-than-girl image?!

  20. I had a revelation like this a few months ago when I realized I actually liked wearing flats. After wearing nothing but sneakers my whole life, I was surprised that other shoes could actually be comfortable. lol. Either way, it's fun to see you try new things. Let us know how they're working out for you after you've had them for awhile.

  21. Cute, cute & cute! I'm trying to do that myself you know, I have always felt so comfortable on my flats or tennis shoes (wich I wear the most), but today, I wore a pair of boots I bought a couple of months ago but was too scared to used them so, today was the day and it felt amazing to do something different for a change. On the other hand, is really nice knowing I'm not the only one who doesn't know how to walk on heels, thank you for motivating everyone to keep trying new things!

  24. I have the second pair in black/brown. Love em!

Someone commented on a post of mine a few days ago that my sunglasses weren't really practical, so she didn't get why I was wearing them. I thought to myself, why does everything have to be practical?! I was wearing them because they were fun! Sure they weren't 100% practical, but I liked how they made me feel when I wore them, and isn't that practical? I guess this post made me think of that. I think getting out of one's own comfort zone is really important to self-expansion and growth, so sometimes you need to screw practicality and do something just because you want to!

  27. I think you might become a chunky heel/wedge kind of gal. I almost bought the black pair a few weeks back. I didn't get them though because I made myself a deal.. for every pair of shoes I bring home I have to get rid of one... I wasn't ready to get rid of any. Glad you branched out and tried them on. They are all super cute

  28. As a flat girl myself, I can't wait to see how you style these! Makes me want to go to Target right now...

  29. All three of them are awesome! I didn't know that Target carried such cute shoes. I am definitely going to check out their shoes next time I am there.

  30. They're all so cute, especially the second pair!

I've been a "flats forevz" girl myself, and I recently cracked and bought two pairs of (lowish, comfortable heels). While I love them as shoes, I still feel like I walk like a giraffe, and the one pair make a racket on the street which makes me even more self-conscious. I'm working on it though! Good luck with your conversion!

  31. WAUW!i am proud of you! me to, i´m in a fase of life that i´m starting to like high heels, but, it´s like you say, they are not always confortable or easy to walk on! i have got one pair that i bought a long time ago for a wedding, but there not compfy.
now you have inspired me to buy some just like the one´s you bought because they look compfy and not to much like a high heel but like a shoe that not a girl (anymore) but a woman would ware. it is a part of our growing up, we change style or mix new things our whole life,so why not trying on some new nice shoes!!!
thank you for giving me this little bit of selfesteem and confidence, from now on i will be looking out for some nice compfy highheels also!!!
