Gawf-Chic

Sunrise by Norah Jones & the Handsome Band on Grooveshark

It's turned incredibly cold (finally!) here in Nashville, and I've been wearing a whole lot of black. I'm not sure if the two are related in any way, but this is a fairly dark outfit for me regardless. I knew I wanted to wear something dark with my new Jeffrey Campbell Busted Boots that I got for Christmas and I figured a little floral number with a tulle underlay would be the perfect offset for the industrial patent shine + buckles. They're really easy to walk in, but they go pretty high up on my ankles. They zip up on the inside of each leg and help keep everything nice and sturdy. They're a pretty fun little shoe! -- Anywhoo, yesterday Mike + I spent the day making exchanges and running errands in Franklin. Ran into two rad blog readers, too! Kelsey at the mall and Nikki at Genghis Grill! Hi ladies! Last night I sat on YouTube for far too long trying to figure out how ~branch out with my makeup. I sort of feel like a lost cause, no lie! I wish my best friend Jessica lived here since she's a makeup pro! Practice makes perfect, I suppose. Mike cooked a delicious dinner and we watched too much Breaking Bad... you know, a typical day!

We are gearing up to head north on Thursday. We're driving up to Chicago to spend a handful of days with Susannah + Chris! I love our random trips to Illinois and I'm really excited about this one. Friends and fun times, then Sunday we're heading to Milwaukee! Mainly because I've never been to Wisconsin and "Visit a new state" is on my 23 before 24 list! If y'all have any suggestions of things to see/do while we're in Milwaukee, please let me know! (In fact, anything to see/do while in the Chicago suburbs, too!) Spending quality time with our best friends is pretty much the icing on the cake for 2012! Perfect way to start it off! xo

Charlotte Russe dress
Target cardigan
HUE tights

PS; The JCs are on sale HERE + you can get an extra 20% off with the code KAELAH (that applies to everything on the site, too!) Believe me when I say, they're a lot more comfortable than they look!

PPS; The song at the very top is one of my all-time favorites. The kind of song you can listen to on repeat and never tire of it. Totally unrelated to the outfit, but the perfect way to start your day! xo

  1. Lovin the outfit!! Woo I live in Milwaukee, there is sooo much to do here! I'd check out the Milwaukee Art Museum (it's FANTASTIC), our Milwaukee Public Museum is pretty rad, too, it's huge. If you are into the bar scene, check out Water St, there are a lot of old bars that are pretty cool down there. And certainly check out the Third Ward. Hope those were some good suggestions!!

    xo,

  5. The Milwaukee Art Museum is beautiful!

Also if you or Mike are fans of beer, there are a handful of brewery tours. I only went on the Miller one, which was longer than most brewery tours but comes with the requisite tasting at the end. There are a few smaller breweries that are less "corporate" but we didn't get to visit them when we were there.

  6. Have fun in Wisconsin and Illinois! I've never been to the USA before so I couldn't give you any advice as to what to do there, but I'm sure you will have lots of fun. I love the clothes that you wear, you inspire me with fashion as I am a major dress wearer too, I don't think I own a single pair of jeans. I love the print of the dress here, and your shoes :) xo

  7. Oh and sorry for spamming, but I forgot to say in my last comment, I mentioned you in my post today which you can find here if you want to take a look http://www.almostdelightful.com/2012/01/happy-new-year-sorry.html. I feel like I'm spamming out my blog but I just wanted to let you know if you didn't know already :) xo

  8. I love how you wear black, so classic and timeless. Kind of funny for a girl who use to never wear black to wear it like you were born in it.

    Happy New Year Kaelah!

  9. In Pleasant Prairie, WI (which should be on your way), there is a Jelly Belly Warehouse that you can tour for free. They give out silly hats to wear and pull everyone around the factory on a mini-train. I did it a few years ago and had a blast. Plus, I can totally see you wearing a pair of colorful JC's into this factory!

  21. The best place to go in Milwaukee is the Safe House, which is a spy-themed bar. You have to whisper a password to get in, and it has amazing little secrets all throughout the bar. Best of all, you can go out the secret exit via phonebooth! It's also really close to the Fonzie statue.

  22. You should visit the Safe House, which is an amazing spy-themed bar. You have to whisper a password to get in, and the entire place is filled with amazing tricks and memorabilia. Best of all, you can take the secret exit out via telephone booth, which lands you really close to Milwaukee's famous Fonzie statue.

Your new years resolutions are very similar to mine, but my main resolutions need to be:

    1. get fitter and healthier
    2. stick at my journo dream
    3. make a home

happy new year, wish you all the best in 2012 and look forward to following you along the way :)

Breaking bad is awesome. I watched like 4 episodes last night after work. I couldn't stop!

  28. Kaelah.. I'm so excited you're coming to Milwaukee! It's about time sista!

There's so much fun stuff to do; however, it's sometimes hard to find if you don't know somebody from MIlwaukee because Milwaukee's geography is similar to St. Louis. Basically it's large and generally easy to navigate, however everything is spread out into little corners with patches of just buildings in between.

If you want to do some vintage/handmade shopping you should check out Kinnickinnic Avenue in Bayview. (It's a small neighborhood of Milwaukee that is minutes away from "the river") There's a bunch of small biz stores over there with great shopping. Just look up "Sparrow Collective" in your GPS. Also check out the "Antique Center" at 1134 South 1st Street. It's a warehouse with a billion floors of random things. They have really weird hours though, so make sure you go before 2.

For eating I would suggest places like Cafe Centraal or Cafe Lulu's in Bayview. (Close to the stores I recommended.) They're bar-restaurants with emphasis on organic and local ingredients. The boys would probably like Cafe Centraal because they have 100+ beers in stock. If beer isn't your thing, you should check out Honeypie Cafe. (If anything, you are almost obligated to go there since you are a honeybee!) The cafe has sandwiches/salads and amazingly adorable little desserts!

If you wanted to do boutique/shoe shopping (!!) you should check out shops located in our Third Ward neighborhood. There's a bunch of lovely little shops and free art galleries. (The Third Ward is our art district) Just look up where our Anthropologie is in your GPS. Our Public Market is there too--it's a great place to grab something quick to eat that isn't fast food.

For more tourist-y things you should check out our art museum, or the Domes at Mitchell Park (an indoor Botanical Garden). If you wanted to do a brewery tour I would suggest Sprecher because for $5, you get five beer samples and unlimited gourmet soda samples.

Hope this helps you out sista!

  41. My best friend lives in Milwaukee and I have visited as many times as I could the past couple years. My favorite places are Alterra Coffee at the Lake. It's right beside the lake and such a beautiful building! Sprecher Brewery and Soda. Take the tour! It's only $5 and you get drink afterwards in the taproom! The Milwaukee Art museum! The building it's self is breathtaking, but what's inside is amazing :) Honestly take an hour or so to walk downtown along the river. There are too many awesome nooks. Plus some of the most amazing Goodwills I have ever visited!

  54. Girllllll! Ill be honest, I'm definitely a lurker on your blog, but kind of a silent one as well (sad day). But I literally read every single one of your posts and I should comment on how much I love them more often, but I usually don't for no good reason other than I'm lazy. HOWEVER, my New Years resolution to change my blogging habits (incluidng being a bad commentor) and here I am, telling you how lovely you are in this dress. Which you are, by the way.

ALSO, expect an email soon? Or a letter?
