30 Day Detox: Up To Speed!

Hello honeybees! How's Thursday for everyone?! Today is officially "Day 11" for me in the 30 Day Detox challenge! It may be your 11th, 6th, 1st or merely the beginning of the idea for you and that's perfectly fine and acceptable! In fact, it's recommended! I was so tickled that so many of you were on board to banish the negative and start treating ourselves with the respect we deserve! Since I've finished the first 1/3 of the challenge, I thought it might be good to reflect back on what all has happened since taking the pledge!

Positive Mind: While "unfortunate" or negative things do still happen, I find that by not tweeting about it or dwelling on it, the feeling passes much quicker. If I'm to tweet something negative then someone will reply to it and thus it spirals into a conversation about that negativity, whether it be that they agree with me or are trying to offer up some sweet words. By not putting those thoughts into someone else's mind, it's much easier to move on from it all together. I still get cut off in traffic. I still get rude cashiers in the market, but when it's all said and done, they're merely a tiny tiny fraction of my day. Why not focus on the brilliant instead, yes? Yes!

Positive Body: I have successfully given up all soda products thus far! 11 days in and I'm feeling great. I'm not even the slightest bit tempted by diet cokes anymore! My water intake fluctuates every day but at this moment I'm currently 50 ounces into my daily water and it's only 1pm! One of my goals was to reduce my sugar intake to almost nothing but that was derailed after day 1 but to make up for it, I've been removing one item from my available foods every so often and that's proving much more successful than just quitting something cold turkey. I'd like tortilla chips to make their way off of my menu but they are my vice! Undeniably delicious! I have removed queso dip though! It's a step in the right direction! And while I'm not one to use table sugar in anything, I am a fan of Splenda... and we all know that Splenda is pretty much the devil himself. Instead, I opted to try the Truvia sweetener stuff (ew!) and Agave Nectar (yum!). My new favorite breakfast is oatmeal with agave! My new favorite snack is a Fuji apple straight from the fridge! Something about cold apples is just splendid. I've also marked of "Hot Yoga" on my 23 before 24 list! I started a hot yoga class last night and boy oh boy, it was rough! I've never sweated so much in my life! My body isn't used to the insane heat yet so it'll be a few classes before I can make it the whole 75 minute session without lying down. I'm still determined! After the full month I'll be good to go in regular yoga classes at the Y! I'm heavily increasing my water intake for that class seeing as it's so grueling.

I'm hoping to find that doing this yoga will help me become slightly less introverted as well. I'm not quite sure what has happened to me over the past handful of years but I've become much more shy and standoff-ish. I was always quite comfortable with being very extroverted and out there in high school, etc, but hopefully this will make me a little less awkward in social situations.

  2. I've had some ups and downs with the challenge. I've noticed the first week was awesome. I was so positive and getting myself to the gym became easier, because the challenge gave me a bigger picture reasoning on going. And although I'm still doing okay with it, it has been harder. My attitude (positivity) has been much easier to control than my eating/working out habits. That has always been my problem. Im hoping within these next two weeks I can do a little better about drinking water and not having a lot of snack food.

    I'm also having problems being so introverted. I was always so out there in high school as well and had no problem standing out and doing my own thing/having my own style, but as I grew up it changed and I'm not sure why. Hopefully I can get out of this phase.

  3. This sounds like such a great idea! You definitely brought up some ideas that I'd like to try (cutting back on soda and junk food, positive thinking), and since it's summer it's a great time for me to start. :D

  4. Oh and I might add, one thing I've noticed a difference of after I started was how bloated I would feel. I felt so big and swollen for a while and after I started the challenge I've felt so much better! :D

  5. Good for you for cutting sugar out of your repertoire! I'm working on that now as well - and I find that substituting with fruit helps tremendously. I work in an office, so I grab a bag of pineapple or a banana when I crave sweets, telling myself if I still want chocolate after, I can have it. I always feel satisfied after, so it's working really well.

    Congrats on the soda cutting, too. It's such a major deal and you'll no doubt see results from that alone!

  6. so awesome that your snacks are now apples. I love love love fruit as well. I love mixing fruits together. the normal strawberries and bananas of course, but also watermelon and bananas. the combination of those two is amazing! I also like pears with strawberries! lemme know if you try it!
    Im very interested in trying out this challenge for myself. thanks for the motivation!

  7. i love figi apples!...especially with natural or low fat PB!:) Yummy:)

    i'm looking forward to all the produce stands in the summer...getting lots of locally grown veggies sounds fun and healthy!...i have ahuge sweet tooth, but try my best to stay away from the candy and treats...although the occasional ice cream cone is an indulgence i need i the summer! great job on staying motivated and true to your plan!

  8. 2011 has been the year of detox for me - changing my eating, my lifestyle, my thinking, everything! Of course I slip up here and there, but overall it's been great.

    I recently started yoga myself - the regular kind, not hot! ;) I absolutely love it and I'm addicted. How have I been missing out all this time?

  9. I have had a real crap time with work this month but I really look forward to after work when I get to go and work out and clear my head and listen to some tunes!

    I find that helps me the most. I have worked really hard at figuring out how I want to eat and live and take care of myself. I am excited! I look forward to everyday despite if there are some crap times!
    This has been a great thing to have all this support even if you dont talk to someone you get to learn things from other people.

  10. A while back I cut sugar comepletely out of my diet. It made me feel so good mentally, physically, and emotionally. I am working on getting back to that. I slipped a few times and dove back into the life of consuming sugar products. I was not ready for the full switch over but it is an major goal of mine. Keep going! It is comepletely worth it!

    As for yoga ( not hot) I just started so I am very new to it and don't have much expertise, but this past week I read on a yoga site "do not eat with in 3 hours to your sessions because your food and stomach need time to adjust". That tip has been very helpful to me because before I could feel my stomach acting up if I ate recently before my sessions.

    If you Stumble online you can add yoga to one of your interests and it will bring you tons of good sites. If you don't know what Stumbling is, I can totally help you with that. :)

  12. I need to get on board with this challenge. My soda intake is off the charts ridiculous and I would love to kick the habit. I've "tried" but never made it a huge priority and I really need to- as well as just eating better all around.

    I'm also very introverted these days. I work at a job where I don't have to deal with customers and that has caused me to go back into my little hole again and become more of an awkward weirdo around people I don't know. So you are definitely not alone there!

  13. I really think this is what my little sister needs-- she just pulled her self out of an abusive relationship and doesn't know where to go from here. And I feel like I hardly know her because he cut her off from family. Maybe a detox is the way she can find herself and she and I can become close like we used to be!

  14. Isn't agave nectar the best? I work at an organic bakery and we use it a ton - I even use it a lot at home. I'm also trying to only drink water and the change in your body is amazing! Your skin looks better, you lose weight, you feel more energized, etc! One thing I recommend is to drink at least a liter in the morning before you eat anything. This helps things, erm, pass better and almost has a detoxification effect by helping to flush the toxins out.

    What an inspiring post! Now I want a cold apple and a good stretch. Beautiful thing for you to be taking control of the positivity in your life and making the most of it by trying new things and making healthier choices. <3

  15. Hey! I just wanted to give you some thoughts about drinks. You said you were drinking diet soda, and studies have shown that people who drink diet sodas are more likely to become diabetic. Also it contains ASAPERTEME which literally is poison and we all know the FDA is corrupt. I recommend drinking green tea (hot or cold). It helps you get your water intake and you also get all the goodness of green tea. I'm partial to matcha (http://www.republicoftea.com/Organic-Double-Green-Matcha-Tea/p/V00643/).

    I'm really proud of you for quitting the diet soda. I have a friend who's been in and out of the hopital for over a year and I talked him into quitting the diet soda and going to green tea and in two months his doctor said his health is so much better and he can move back from Texas to California. I've been drinking green tea daily for over two years and I haven't been sick once.

    Also, tortilla chips are like the good side of a "bad" chip thing. Salsa is great because it's all vegetable, no fat and almost no calories. You just have to find one with little sodium because sodium is a hidden menace in salsa. And cold fruit is so good! I love cold grapefruit, it's like a popsicle. And grapefruits are awesome, you loose weight while you eat it. It speeds up your metabolism. Drinking water does, but cold water speeds it up more because your body has to work to warm up the water :) Green tea also speeds it up. You can get a big pitcher, fill it with water, buy a pack of green tea at Trader Joe's for $2 for 48 bags and steep 5 bags or so on the counter, then put it in the fridge.

    Ohh sorry about the long comment but I love healthy eating. I'm not so picky about what I eat, I'll try anything, but I'm picky about where it comes from and if it's a whole food or not. :) If you have any more questions feel free to email me :) I could keep going on but I don't want to bug you with it. <3

  16. I love this! I have been wanting to do some sort of detox and this is sooo inspiring!

    Thus far I have been really trying to cut out pretty much anything processed and eat only whole foods!
    As far as thinking... I really need to work on focusing on the positive and not letting myself get stressed over everything!

  17. I've recently cut out soda myself and have been drinking more water...have you tried the Mio drink enhancers yet?! they are so yummy. I've found myself drinking so much more water and loving it because of this stuff. I love the fruit punch and the blueberry pomegranate (tastes like grape, actually). You can find it in the drink mix isle at the grocery store & it's about $3-4. soooo worth it.

  19. I'm not much of a soda drinker, but I'm definitely drinking much more water now and I have stopped eating meat and started eating more vegetables. I had actually been doing a detox diet before you posted it and when you did, it felt like it was definitely the right time. My body's been feeling great, I just need to start waking up earlier and work on my attitude still! :D

  20. Hum. Well, soda is good once in a while. After you give it up, it's hard to like the feeling in your stomach again. The more soda you put in your belly, the less food you eat, the more you burp. There's also something about sugar that I don't like that much. I listen to my body very closely, if I eat more sugar than I'm supposed to, I get dizzy. Same with food, if I eat more than the necessary, I get headaches. If you drink something with sugar after a full meal, you'll get sleepy. So that's a good excuse for reducing sugary drinks. I eat a lot of salad. People hate salads, but I think the trick is in the dressing. To make sure I'm getting the best flavor and some good proteins I make my own dressing. I've also heard that olive oil is very good. I think tortilla chips are OK, as long as they're not the only snack you eat. I eat a lot of tortilla, I'm Mexican and I don't think I will ever be able to give it up, I gave up the flower tortillas instead. Good luck with your detox. Receive good vibes from me!

  21. Sounds like you're doing good! And I guess hot yoga can be very tough, never done it though. And as for the soda, I almost never drink soda and I can assure you: I never long for it. So go on with scraping off soda of your menu, it'll get easier ;)

    What I like to do to feel good about myself is running. While I'm running I sort of stop thinking, because I'm putting all my energy into my legs and my breathing. Sometimes I think 'Wow, look at that beautiful sky' or something, but that's about it. And at the end I feel realllly good (partly because of the endorphins, but also because I have done something I love to do).
