30 Day Detox: Mind + Body


It's no secret that lately I've been dealing with some stuff. And by stuff I simply mean just the daily learnings of life which can get us down/put us in a funk. Sometimes the days are brilliant, and sometimes the days leave something to be desired. Little frustrations like a seemingly incoherent driver or a rude passer-by in the store seem to become gigantic obstacles along my daily path. It's also no secret that sometimes I can have a temper. Actually, okay, that might have been a little secret. (But it's true. I really do.) Not the type of temper where I throw things and swing fists or anything like that! Just that I can sometimes let the little things overcome me. One small blip on the radar can turn an entire day around.

But that's when I got to thinking... if one tiny little event like that can turn my day upside down, why can't one positive little thought turn it right side up? Well, I'm vowing to give it a try! I've always advocated positive thinking in this little blog and sometimes I need a reminder myself. For the next 30 days, I vow to abstain from any negative tweeting or blogging! Twitter is typically my "go to" for quick rants. Especially on Friday and Saturday nights at my bar. But I'm a huge believer in what we put out into the world is a direct influence on what we receive back.

Sometimes it just feels so good to get things off of your chest. Maybe a tweet here or there, just to release whatever is building up. Sadly that can be so counterproductive. Not only are we sharing negative energy, but we're putting those exact thoughts into someone else's head. Instead, let's take out the bad and replace it with all kinds of good! Every time we think a negative thought, we should turn around and think a positive one, whether it is about ourselves, someone else, or even a situation.

Not only am I vowing to remove the bad energy from my mind, I'm also going to attempt to remove the bad energy from my body by being more conscious of what goes in it. On the way to work the other night Mike and I stopped for Mongolian stirfry and dessert, and shortly thereafter I realized how unhappy my body was after the dessert. I felt great after a veggie-rich dinner (as usual), but all it took was a tiny amount of ice cream to really make me feel sickly. We started talking about it and of course as most people say, sugar is the culprit of most body evils. They say it takes between 21 and 28 days to banish cravings completely, so let's see how 30 days will do! (Miss Lauren actually went raw last week! While that may not be what works for you [or me], it's a testament to willpower! Go Lauren!) (Oh, and Miss Danielle is also doing an "8 Weeks to a Better Me" on her blog every Sunday!)

I am hoping that by just making small, almost unnoticable changes in my day to day life, I will feel enriched and just... better! Don't we all want to feel better?!   1. We should create a twitter hashtag #30daydetox and we can post positive comments, quotes, pictures, links, etc. Then we can have a place to go read all of these fun things when we are in a bad mood!

  2. I am DEFINITELY going to do this, and what a perfect time to start!!! Last week was so horrendous I felt like crawling into bed and staying there for the rest of my life. Every little thing that went wrong was magnified 100x just because everything big was going wrong as well. I dragged my bad mood onto my blog & twitter, and then just felt more miserable for dumping my problems on other people. I also seriously went off my healthy-eating streak since bad mood = comfort food. (That rhymes!)

    Anyway.. I'm so glad you posted this! I'm really excited to change things around this month :D

  4. I would LOVE to participate in this! I have recently been trying to lose weight and I went to calorie counting, but I don't think I eat very healthy and I really want to change that. I cut out a lot of the super crappy foods so I don't feel sluggish like before, but i still think its bad. ie I don't get enough fruits and veggies. I really love splenda though, is that cheating? haha

    when I really need to let something out but I don't wanna hurt anyone or just spread the negative vibe, I write it down and flush it down the toilet or burn it. Whatever is safer. Also, I stopped making "Things I hate" lists in my mind and it helped a lot. You know, when you go "I hate this more than anything!" and you start making a top 3 things you hate. If you don't make the list you lose the opportunity to dwell on them.

    Just a wee help on the sugar front. I did the low GL diet last year before I went vegan (trying to be low GL and vegan hurts my tiny mind, so it was one or the other) and 5-HTP is an awesome supplement to help ward off sugar cravings :) Helped me, and I was a sugar fiend!

  9. I think this is a fantastic idea! Being pregnant can put you in such a rut as you get further and further along and I keep finding myself just being a lump on a log which essentially leads to me feeling down and it is just a vicious cycle! So what I am saying, is that I think I am going to participate too! :P

  12. Oh I think that sounds great! A lot of tiny things can really get me down, but little wonderful things should really perk me up! Thanks for such a great reminder! I've just kind of started a paleo way of eating and cravings are my biggest concern esp. after having a blah day! it is really good to keep in mind the days needed in order to overcome cravings! It is nice to see that so many girls are in on the idea of eating healthy...and that I'm not alone in this journey!

  14. Wow. I so need to hear this and definitely need to join in and do it. I'm very bad about letting one small, negative/bad thing totally bring me down. It can be like a total mood crash that I don't bounce back from until a whole day later! And I hate feeling like that - because I have absolutely too much to be thankful for and so many blessings in my life. So - I'm in!

    You are always so inspiring to me, I love this idea!

    I feel like I'm the same way... I want to get something off my chest, and before I know it I've been ranting and raving about every little thing!

    I try hard to be positive, but I too take a tiny little negative "ding" and let it chip away until I feel horrible. :(

    I too have been trying to become more aware of my food choices, and how I treat my body.

    A 30 day challenge sounds great! I always cheat when I begin a "diet", mostly because I feel there's no end in sight, and I feel restricted. If I keep in mind that after 30 days I can do what I like, it might be easier! After 30 days, I might not WANT those bad for me things tho... fingers crossed!

  19. such a wonderful idea. I took a similar approach about a year ago now, I went vegetarian again, started working out, doing yoga and meditating. I cut down on caffeine as well. Sugar doesn't have as negative of an effect on me but I did notice that eliminating meat and significantly reducing my processed foods helped a ton! Good luck!

  20. I'm joining you in cutting down on the sugar!

    I'm not bad for the negativity, though. I ran a Three Things February project on my blog this year where every evening in February participants wrote down three things which had made them smile that day, big or small - it really gets you in the way of looking for the bright points of the day instead of dwelling on irritations.

    That said, some friends and I have a secret Rant Club on Facebook where we put the annoyances which are just too big to keep to ourselves! We don't use it much but it's nice to know that it's there.

  21. oh definitely joining in the detox party! i noticed the other week when my whole family felt really negative about something that happened, everyone complaining all the time made me really low - it's so much better to put positivity out there!
    Also have been ill recently and comfort eating so need to get some of this sugar out my system.

  25. I think you and I are meant to be best friends.
    I have a small temper.
    Okay, a big temper.
    Like you, the littlest things can set me off, turn my entire day around, and make me angry.
    I would LOVE to get on this 30-day detox train because I am so tired of being angry. I hate being this angry, moody person all of the time.
    Yoga has helped me deal with stress and anxiety better, and meditation has also greatly helped, but I still feel like something isn't right inside of me.

I feel like I've already been working on the thinking positive thoughts for a long time ( that makes a HUGE difference, you'll be so glad you did!) but I can DEFINITELY use a body detox. i swear i live off of sweets and soda/pop and I've been wanting to cut back for a long time so I'm gonna take this opportunity and participate with you!!   28. This is such a lovely idea! I agree that while sometimes it feels good to vent, it can also be quite self-destructive over time as you get into the habit of being negative. I would love to be a more positive, 'glass half full' person. I am definitely going to jump on board too! xxx

I've been struggling for a few weeks with illness, I don't know about anyone else but when you feel down and you eat 'comfort food' (read chips, chocolate and pizza) you know that these really should be treat food and not a self-medication... and the venting thing really doesn't help anyone either! Going to try with the hashtag too as I am a Twitter newbie. Loving your work :-) xx

    I think this is a really healthy thing to do. I agree all the energy we put out there, we get back (and truth be told we could do with some more positivity in this world).

    I think I'll try this too. I have to say facebook is my outlet cos my friends all know my sense of humor. I usually try to keep twitter PG but I think I'll try to keep both fronts positive.

    I thought I should tell you that even though I may not comment all the time, your blog is one of the blogs that I HAVE to read each day. You're always trying to be so positive but at the same time ya keeps it real.

  37. This is such a wonderful idea. I often visit your blog to vibe off the positive energy... and I do the same with mine. Writing as positively as I can to maybe get my mind thinking in such a way. But we are all only human, and negativity often crops up. My frustrations are usually released in the form of cryptic, but oh so obvious status updates on facebook. And you're right, more often than not they are met with even more negativity, which I guess only adds fuel to the fire. Especially when it comes to the weekend and I am dealing with customers at my bar too!!! So I am going to take this challenge of yours, and try my best with it. No promises. It's going to be tough. But thank you for sharing it x

  41. I think this is a genius idea and I would LOVE to participate! I'm totally one of those people who let the small things get the better of them and even though I'm always striving to live a life of positivity, I sometimes find it hard.

    Most recently all my negativity has been about my body image. After reading your post and really thinking about it I realized that yesterday is the first day in a long time where I felt truly beautiful about who I am inside and out.

  43. I'm IN! I'm so glad I came across this post... I've been overwhelmed with sadness lately by some major life stuff (my doggy companion of 15 years is dying, it's almost a year since my best friend was killed, etc.) to the point that it's affecting all the small stuff too. Everything seems difficult, and I have a very low tolerance for anything stressful or even slightly irritating. I know there's not much I can do about the big things, but I've been feeling like I need to find a way to snap myself out of allowing the small things to impact me so greatly. This sounds like a great idea and I'm really looking forward to participating!
