// Mexico Snapshots

We're on our fourth day in Mexico and I already don't want to go home anytime soon! It's so hot and humid, but it's so fun, too. Today I think we're going to make the trip out to Isla Mujeres via catamaran. The only reason I'm going: to hold a nurse shark! Let's hope it's not as lame as the Interactive Aquarium yesterday (Don't ever go to that. Sooooooo dumb.) The only real bummer so far this trip is that last night I had a major asthma attack. Out of nowhere I simply couldn't breathe and I started to panic. I've had asthma my entire life, but have had seriously zero issues with it for the past ~6 years. Mike had to rush down to our host's house and make me coffee to help me breathe. I'm still have a really hard time drawing in air, and of course I don't have an inhaler. I've never been so scared in my life. I was this far from a panic attack. Hoping that copious amounts of coffee and caffeine will help until we get out of the insane humidity. Feeling faint-y in a foreign country? Not so awesome haha

Anyway, here are a few quick photos from Mexico thus far. I only get wifi for about ~15 minutes in the morning and night it seems (we're phone + internet-less otherwise!). It's been an interesting adventure trying to navigate Cancun and all of it's surroundings without any form of technology. I like it!

If any of you have been to Cancun or Tulum, let us know your favorite things to see/do/eat! We'll be heading down to Tulum on Sunday and staying until Wednesday :) Adios!

  1. On your way down to Tulum. Stop off in Akumal, a small, eco-friendly fishing village that is the best kept secret in the Yucatan Peninsula (it'll be on your left down the highway about 30 minutes from Cancun, if memory serves). We've rented a house there twice and it is GORGEOUS, so serene and the people are incredibly warm and friendly. Have a delicious meal on the beach at Lol-Ha. Great shopping too. Check out some Cenotes (fresh water sink holes) while you're in the area too. Lastly, we LOVE Xcaret (natural waterpark)... GREAT snorkeling... much better than Xel Ha. Enjoy!

  2. I love Isla Mujeres! When you go, try to get a spot on the beach under one of those umbrellas! There's one "rent-a-beach" where as long as you buy at least one drink, you can stay there for as long as you want! Hope you continue to have an amazing time!

  5. I put a link to this blog post in Isla Mujeres News today. (The 'around the net in the past 24 hours section toward the end) You might enjoy the Tortugranja on Isla Mujeres tho it is very small time & only costs $3...it's main focus is saving, protecting, incubating nearly 100,000 turtle eggs annually and the hatchlings are released (thousands at a time in public events) from beaches the east coast (It is getting to be the end of the laying season...they lay on our beach..in the wee hours.) Enjoy your visit manana! Feel free to send me any q's..my email is in the blog or post a comment. http://aboutislamujeres.blogspot.com/

  7. Aww, I hope you're asthma isn't too bad for the rest of your trip. I had it really badly as a teenager and I know how scary it can be. Finger's crossed it doesn't get that bad again. These photos are beautiful, it looks so warm! Glad you are having fun Mrs and Mr xo

  8. Definitely go to the Mayan ruins at Coba and Tulum if you get the chance! Coba is further away from the water, so it's more jungle-type ruins. It also has a huge temple, Nohoch Mul, that you can climb, which I highly recommend! Tulum's ruins are right on the water, so you get gorgeous views while walking around on mostly flat ground. There are also tons of cenotes you can visit. Have an amazing time!

  10. if you visit the tulum ruins (you should, it is very inexpensive to get in. be aware, though, that it will be hot- no shade!), you MUST take your swimsuit and experience the beach. it was the most beautiful experience of our trip. the sand is white powder and the water is a ridiculous shade of blue. this was the best advice that i was given on our trip, so i thought that i would share it with you :) enjoy the rest of your trip!

  11. As long as you have your amazing husband to help you through an asthma-related attack in the middle of an extremely humid country, you'll have a keeper for life!

    HAVE FUN!

  12. I believe there is a snorkel place around tulum. I visited the ruins and snorkeled in kind of a protected area but still open to the ocean. It was pretty cool, specially because as much as I love the ocean, I have an irrational fear of getting stung by jelly fish so I felt safer in this park. hhahahahha......a huge parrot fish was litterally 6 inches away from my face. SO PRETTY.

  17. Hey Kaelah! My hubby and I went to Mexico for our honeymoon last year and stayed near Tulum. I don't know if this is your thing, but we went to Xel Ha. You can snorkel with beautiful fish and tube down a natural ravine. There's also cliff jumping and you can swim with dolphins! Hope you are having fun!

  24. We went to Tulum on our honeymoon and LOVED it! The water is SO blue there and there's so much history! Definitely worth going to the ruins. We actually took a catamaran to Tulum, went snorkling and then toured the ruins. Very beautiful!

  26. The air is sooo thick in Mexico, it took me a few days to adjust to the humidity! I stayed in Playa Del Carmen over the summer (it's between Cancun and about 30 minutes north of Tulum) you should really stop by the downtown area, the main street is awesome, tons of shops and places to eat. From what I've heard its where the locals vacation - if you go try anything at Carboncitos, it's delicious! We went to Tulum, it's pretty beautiful but *hot* try to bring a sun hat or umbrella, there isn't much shade!

  27. The air is so thick in Mexico! I stayed in Playa Del Carmen (in between Cancun & Tulum) I definitely recommend going to see the Main St (where the ferry is) in Playa and eating at Carboncitos - delicious food! A place called Fresh was also really good. You can also find jungle animals on the main boardwalk, I got to hold a baby lion! We went to Tulum as well, it has beautiful views but be sure to bring a sun hat or umbrella & water as there was not much shade! The water is so ridiculously blue there, it's awesome!
