// Kaelah's Cocktail Hour: Bartender Knows Best

Two weeks ago I shared my first cocktail recipe here on Little Chief Honeybee! (Can you believe two weeks have passed already?! Yikes! I'm a little embarrassed for my lack of promptness!) I shared my all-time favorite-drink-ever no-one-makes-it-like-i-do (yes, I'm proud!) New Old Lady recipe! Then I realized, um, ya probably want to know what it looks like! If you're like me, you judge your food and drink heavily on the way it looks. That's simply how it works for me. There aren't many things I'll eat that don't look appetizing (no-bake cookies and pasta bake are my exceptions!). Today I'm going to share with you not one, but five (!!!) fantastic cocktail recipes that I use frequently at my bar (including my newest creation from Saturday night!).

I love it when my readers pin things from my blog, but please do not copy + paste the recipes into the description area on Pinterest. Feel free to use the name(s) of the drinks or any additional descriptions, but please do not duplicate or repost the full recipe. Thank you!

One of the coolest things about bartending is you can just make up recipes. Mix a little of this and a little of that, then come up with a really cool name. It may exist somewhere else by some totally different calling, but it can be your little creation in your little bar (even if your "bar" is just your home or circle of friends!) Here's a rainbow of beverages for your next night out, party, or if you're feeling fancy on a night at home!
Blue Valium
This is a drink we make all too often at our bar. It's a simple two-liquor drink and it tastes pretty darn good! It's a bright blue and it gets a lot of attention. More often than not I have eager patrons coming to the bar asking "What is that blue drink you just made? I want that!" simply because it's pretty. Looks sell in a bar, that's for sure!

The recipe:
1 ounce vodka
1/2 ounce blue curacao
Equal parts sweet 'n sour mix + Sprite
Garnish with a cherry

Liquid Marijuana
This is without a doubt our most popular drink at my bar. It has only since become the favorite this year, but we sell them like hotcakes. It got so crazy trying to pour all of the liquors for each one that we actually started pre-mixing the alcohol so we can do a simple 1.5 oz pour. If you decide to pour each one you'll undoubtedly get more alcohol, so be careful! This one can add up quick and you might be stumbling around! We don't want that!

The recipe:
1/2 ounce Malibu rum
1/2 ounce light rum
1/2 ounce blue curacao
1/2 ounce apple pucker (or melon liqueur)
Equal parts sweet 'n sour mix + pineapple juice
Garnish with a cherry

Peached Whale
This is my newest creation! I came up with it Saturday night at work and boy oh boy... it's good! I polled my Twitter followers for a name and Vanessa came up with the winner: Peached Whale! It's absolutely perfect for a drink with Malibu and peach schnapps! I actually ended up selling quite a few Saturday night as I told everyone about them! I brought my own passionfruit juice but we might just have to start stocking it! I promise you won't regret this one! Most bars don't have passionfruit juice so this is a great drink to make at home!

The recipe:
1/2 ounce Malibu rum
1/2 ounce Bacardi rum
1/2 ounce peach schnapps
1/2 ounce amaretto
Fill passionfruit juice
Garnish with a cherry (or three!)

Tootie Fruity
We make this one quite a bit at my bar too. It's a great drink that is super easy to make at home. I'm not really a fan of vodka but I know a lot of people are so if you like vodka and fruity drinks (but hate that you always get handed a Sex on the Beach), this is your calling!

The recipe:
1 ounce vodka
1/2 ounce triple sec
Equal parts grenadine (or cranberry juice!), orange juice, and pineapple juice
Garnish with a cherry

Cape Cod
This is as simple as they come. It really needs no explanation! If you're a no-fuss-or-frills kind of gal, you might really like the Cape Cod!

The recipe:
1.5 ounces vodka
Fill cranberry juice
Garnish with a lime

So now I'm curious... Did any of you try the New Old Ladies I blogged about the first Kaelah's Cocktail Hour?! Did you like them? (If you're ever in Tennessee, stop by my bar! I promise to make them better!) How about these? Think you'll give any of them a go?!

  1. Definitely going to try the peached whale!! With the Malibu rum, do you use coconut or can you use any flavor?

    3. I understand what you meant! ;) I think it'd be really good with the Malibu mango!

    4. @becky54670 - Malibu IS a brand name...there are numerous different flavors of malibu (coconut being the most common) such as malibu melon, pineapple, mango, passion fruit, and tropical banana.

    5. Yea there are a few different flavors of Malibu, and Malibu IS a brand name. I think pineapple would be good :)

  3. Hey what bar do you work in? I live in your area and have probably been in there before I started following your blog! :)

  4. I didn't try it, but I have, since your last post, had my first alcoholic drink! Since I had previously had virgin strawberry daiquiris, I decided that would be my first actual one. And it was pretty good! I think a little alcohol here and there isn't too bad.
Not to mention, I felt nice and calm which was fabulous.
But enough about me, haha. That blue drink looks delicious!

  5. I would like to try the Peached Whale and the Liquid Marijuana for sure. Those look really yummy.

  7. @Rachael: I work 50 miles outside of downtown nashville (where we live) so i don't usually share the name on here! feel free to message me via twitter or email and i'll be happy to tell you :) it's a drive though!

@Danielle G- it's 50 miles outside of Nashville! it's a redneck karaoke joint and i don't normally recommend it to anyone! haha

Random question.. hopefully you have some time to answer it, but I'm coming to Nashville next weekend for a show Saturday night, but I will be there Friday night through Sunday and was hoping you could suggest some cool stuff to do/see while I'm there? I have a few things in mind, but I thought it would be good to ask a local! Let me know if you have any ideas! Thanks :)

  19. Haha, I went out to buy the ingredients the day you posted the New Old Lady! I'm a die-hard Manhattan drinker, and so the NOL seemed like just a fruitier version of it's rather strong cocktail sibling. I made the syrup myself and didn't bother to halve or quarter the recipe, so now I've got a few bottles of it in my fridge. We tend to only drink cocktails at home on the weekends, but since you posted it, I haven't strayed. Thanks so much! It's nice to have a gentler hard cocktail to add to my hostessing roster!

  20. soo many colors!! my sister is going through some rough times right now, I bet she wouldn't mind sharing some of these with me some weekend evening :)

  21. Yes! I love Vodka-Cran. Add a splash of Malibu or soda water and mm! So good! I bartended, too, and I loved making up new drinks. Two of my favs:

    1. Vanilla Vodka with Diet Coke and lime. Tastes like fruit loops!

    2. Absolut Citron and Pineapple juice. So dangerous, so good!

    More posts like this please!

  36. These look so good! When I use to go out pretty regularly I use to always order a drink very similar to the Blue Valium and people always use to ask me about it. At that time too I had a bartender I always went to at the club I always went to and he would pretty much see me and start screaming with happiness and then make me the drink haha. Oh I miss those days!

I really want to try the Peached Whale, it looks so fabulous, my mouth is drooling at the idea.

  45. what is the sweet and sour mix?

    ReplyDelete
  46. LOL The Liquid Valium was my first alcoholic drink ever...only the bartender on base called it an Adios Motherfucker. xD Bringsback awesome memories!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. An Adios Motherfucker is actually a tequila base (rather than vodka), but it's equally as yummy, I agree!

  47. Oops...I meant to say Blue Valium. LOL

  48. if u premix the alcohol for the Liquid Marijuana how much would you use per can of pineapple juice and sweet and sour? having a party this weekend wanted to get the correct measurements.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. eh, just kind of eyeball it. i mean, a can of pineapple juice is SUBSTANTIALLY smaller than a thing of sweet and sour, so that wouldn't be an accurate measurement anyway. if you had a liter of alcohol mixed, i'd say you could start with a liter of the two juices mixed. then just taste it. add more juice as needed. in a glass that i mix, the juice to alcohol ration ends up being about half and half (when it's full of ice) so just taste and alter to suit :)

    2. I am from Australia and wondering what the sweet and sour is?

    3. Sweet and sour is just a mixer you can find at all major supermarkets.
