This wall has been a labor of love. And frustration, and confusion, and anger, and and and... haha! I mean, I'm just being honest here. When we first decided to make over Toby's room, we were left with a 6 year old begging (demanding?) for red walls and a zebra striped bunk bed. Clearly you can see that my child is very gifted when it comes to interior design. We crushed his dreams and told him "No way, Jose!" but decided to come up with a few ideas that we were okay with, and let him choose his favorite. Several of the ideas were black and white themed (I'm not sure why I'm on that kick right now, but I like it) and we had a few that would play up the light pistachio color his room was already painted. He immediately chose the black and white skyline of Nashville because he loves the Batman (AT&T) building. Boom! We were all stoked on it.

Mike and I gathered the supplies and got started. He painted the whole room white while I worked and tended to the kids. Then we tag teamed the taping process. We sort of winged everything based on a picture I had printed out, and I'm stoked at the outcome. We worked on the AT&T building together, but then Mike rocked the rest of the outlines himself. I tackled the windows on all of the buildings, and then he painted. Well we didn't really think about painting a white coat over the tape to seal it, so when pulled the tape off it bled everywhere (see the picture up there!). Sad freaking day. We were pretty angry honestly (mostly at ourselves - but also at 3M for making really really terrible painter's tape. Seriously, we'll never use anything other than Frogtape again. Loyal! They just didn't have the thickness we needed. Tangent!) Anyway, we moped around and cussed the wall before calling it a night and dealing with it the next day.

We knew the only way to save it would be to get a small paintbrush or seven, or start over. There was no way in the world we could tape that off again (OMG no.) so we opted for paintbrushes. Apparently foam brushes do the trick quite well! Mike handled the outlines yet again and I went in for the windows. He ended up finishing it himself once Linden woke up (He's my hero) and BOOM! There you have it, Nashville skyline!

We're super stoked with how it turned out. We ended up painting Toby's bunk beds black to match, and we painted a few more pieces of furniture black, too. We aren't even remotely finished with the room yet so you'll have to wait on that. But I'm happy with where we came from!

Wish us luck with the rest of it!

  1. Ironic enough, I am doing almost the exact same thing to my boy's bedroom at the current time. Except their rooms have higher skyscrapers and instead of white, its outlined in the colors of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in like an ombre effect and I am painting over the top a luna celestial skylight. I ordered stickers from Fatboy.com where the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are jumping from the skyscrapers and here's the kicker, I'm making their bunk bed look like the van from the movie, so the TMNT stickers look like they are jumping onto the van. I also am installing a rat tunnel for our rats so they can wonder through the "streets" and they are getting a stacked pizza box table with a man hole rug.

I went too much into designing their room and the color for the other walls all while working a job that I loved, but couldn't handle because I had way too much time on my hands.

  4. Feel with you in regards to the tape-disaster. Something similar happened to me with a smaller project a couple of years ago...
Nowadays with all the "flip a house" and "renovate" shows I've watched that wouldn't happen again, lol!
Anyways.... great outcome, looks fantastic, so worth the effort. Bet Toby loves it!!

  5. That is amazing! I LOVE that. Well freaking done, folks. You are hugely inspiring me to be more creative than just "GREEN ROOM" when I re-create The Dude's room ASAP. <3
