// Style File: 90's Child

I was born in Spring 1988 so despite "growing up" in the 90's, I feel like I missed out the "cool" aspect of it because I wasn't quite a teenager. The 90's are definitely one of my favorite decades in terms of style, music, and overall aesthetic. That might sound like total crap since I don't really act/dress that way, but there's the iconic look of the grungy 90's that I adore.

When I saw this dress at ModCloth I instantly dreamt up an outfit around it and this is the result. Now I'm not going to pretend to know all there is to know about the 90's in any way, but this is what my brain thinks of when I remember idolizing people who were 8-10 years older than me at the time. It could be based solely on a stereotype, but even if that's the case, I still really dig the look. And shoutout to Tragic Kingdom! That was the first album I ever bought! And it's still one of my absolute favorites!

What about you? Were you into the 90's at all?
What was/is your favorite aspect?

  1. Yessss!!! I was 15-20 in the early '90's, it was the coolest!! The music the bands, Nirvana Pearl Jam Hole, saw 'em all. The clothes, vintage, grunge, leather jackets floaty skirts DM's, Camden, Kate Moss and Johnny Depp. Quentin Taratino, maybe I was just the right age to soak it up, but nothing has come close to the nineties!!

  2. Yes!!! This is perfect! I was ALMOST to young. I turned 15 in '99. Fortunately I have a brother eleven years older and an awesome cousin who helped me soak it all in. Sooo happy nineties elements are coming back in style!

  3. I'm just over a year younger than you and feel the same as I was still just a child in the 90s! I sort of relived the era during my college years though, wearing DMs and lots of denim haha.

  4. I was born in the 90's so I got to live the cool children's aspect but I swear everything was better in the 90s. I also have a sister whose 8 years older and I got to watch her be in the height of her teenage years in the 90s and it seemed pretty rad. Lucky for me I still have some her hand me down clothes that I wear now, funny enough I just did a 90s outfit post wearing a floral dress that was hers and a jean vest!

  5. I graduated in 1996 :) I loved my class- we were across the board with music. A group of us could be hanging out jamming to Beck, Green Day, Pantera, Jodeci, Snoop, Garth Brooks and nobody would bat an eye. I loved my Doc Martens, flannel, brick red lipstick and Claire Danes hair. Oh I miss the 90s!

  10. I love everything about the 90s, especially the style and music. I wish I had been a teenager in the 90s, too (I was born in '89). This definitely looks like a typical outfit I'd wear, haha.

  11. I was a teen in the 90s absolutely... and although it's fun to look back at, honestly, most of the fashion was VERY unflattering for every body type! That being said, it's still fun to revisit sometimes!

  13. I was born in 90 so I definitely understand what you're saying. I feel like we got to experience a lot of the fun trends of the 90s still though! I love looking back at the styles with nostalgia and incorporating a few into my look today. The daisy print dresses are something that's easily updated but I love the perfect 90s-tastic replication here! Mini backpacks!
