// The Art of Intentions: Tips For Making + Achieving Your Goals

The Art of Intentions - KaelahBee.com
I've shared a few weekly intentions posts around here, and I love the excitement that tends to come from them. Not only from myself, but from y'all. You get so fired up and I feel like that just sort of migrates its way through the internet, which in turns fires me up. It's kind of awesome when you have that, ya know? My first set of intentions went off without a hitch. I made sure that they were things I truly wanted to achieve, and then I did them. My second list? Ehhhh, not so successful. I think I accomplished 3 of them. I hate failing at anything, so it really got me thinking about the art of intentions and how to ensure success. Here are a few things I've come up with. Hopefully they'll help you make and achieve your intentions!

Intentions shouldn't be something that "make or break" you. They should simply be things that would bring joy, relaxation, and satisfaction to your life if completed. Things you intend on doing. Things that won't totally wreck your world if unattained. You can totally turn every day tasks into intentions, but I've found that in order to be unstoppable in attaining them, you must really, really want them. My first set of intentions featured things like "send more snail mail" and "read Desiderata every day." Those things bring me actual joy in life. I get happy popping a handwritten card in the post. I feel rejuvenated when I read Desiderata in the morning. Heck, I even feel more motivated if I don't see dirty dishes out of the corner of my eye. My second set of intentions ended up being things I just threw together to have a list. That was totally detrimental to my success. Sure, I love to paint signs for fun, but it wasn't something that would complete me in any way. Getting up at 6:30am every day was great in theory, but it was freezing cold and pitch black outside, and even my husband couldn't pull himself from the covers. I managed to get up around 7:30 every morning, which is a feat in itself, but it wasn't the 6:30 I set out for. You see what I mean? I've noticed the same trend in my 25 before 26 (and previous) goal lists. Throwing things on a list just to have a list is totally counterproductive! Instead of feeling motivated and inspired by reaching our goals, we're simply claiming to attempt something we have no desire to really do. Then we "fail" to complete them and we're left feeling unsuccessful and frustrated.

Here are a few tips to help you make and achieve your intentions!

  • Only "intend" toward goals that will actually benefit and motivate you in some way. For some people this is washing the dishes directly following every meal (this actually motivates us a ton!). For others it may mean waking up 20 minutes early to get a quick work out in. Intentions and a to do list are two separate things.
  • Don't overwhelm your list or yourself with too many goals. If some weeks you only have one or two intentions, that's fine! Put all of your energy and focus into those two things. If other weeks you feel like you can tackle ten intentions, you go girl! Get it done!
  • Try to choose intentions that benefit multiple areas of your daily life. A perfect example for us is keeping our house clean each day. A clean house is seriously the biggest tool I've found in how motivated I am each day. A clean house not only looks and feels nice, but it also makes me more likely to be productive. Win/win!
  • Think up small rewards for each completed intention or list. Whether you want to treat yourself for each item checked off, or wait until you've tackled the whole list, rewards are great tools for motivation. It can be as small or large as you'd like. Nurture your positive actions!
  • Stagger your list with varying degrees of difficulty. Maybe two-thirds of your list is super easy and doesn't require too much effort, but the other one-third is a larger goal to tackle. Complete the easy stuff and let that motivate you to do something bigger and better!
  • Break your list down into individual days if needed. I prefer to do weekly intentions, and then a daily to do list. My to do list always includes more menial tasks, but I try to make time to put one or two intentions on it each day. It helps round out my plan and keep me on track.
  • Don't get frustrated if you don't complete them. The best part about intentions is that they shouldn't make or break your entire day/week/being. Use them as motivation to succeed, but don't beat yourself up over not completing every single item. Over time you'll start to see a pattern in the way you set goals and achieve them. Maybe you'll learn something new about yourself and hopefully that will help you on your path to short term goal making.
  • Make more intentions and lists! Regardless of your track record for completing them, don't stop making these intentions. Make them part of your Monday morning routine if you have to! Just like anything else, practice makes perfect. We'll perfect our methods over time and start to learn what's really important to us as individuals. Even if you totally bomb the week before, don't let that stop you from getting back in the saddle.
  • Once you've completed an item on your intentions list, try to continue doing it. Make that intention a habit. Make it a priority to send snail mail or be prompt with your dishes. Let that joy and satisfaction be consistent.

Intentions can be a great first step in terms of self discovery. I've already learned so much about myself just by creating intentions lists for 6 weeks. I've become so much more productive in my daily life, even with things that have nothing to do with my intentions. If you make it a weekly habit, I'd love to hear what your list entails!

Here's my list for this week... short but sweet!
  • Clean the office. Let it be the streamlined, productive space it was intended to be.
  • Wash the dishes after each meal rather than waiting until the end of the day.
  • Make at least one new friend. Online or off - reach out to someone who intrigues me.
  • Find time for a coffee date with Mike. Talk business, talk life, talk whatever. Just enjoy it.

How about you? Do you intend on doing anything special this week? Let's hear it!

  1. I sometimes find myself just putting things together and not really taking the time to think about them like how it would benefit myself and Rob, is it realistic or important! I think my main goal for the week is to get over this cold! I'll be able to go so much more with this cold gone. I feel like I can't really get anything done when I'm sick! I hope you accomplish your intentions this week!

  2. Grand idea!

*finish the deep clean of the house that I started this weekend (only the bathroom and bedroom left)
*start an editorial calendar for my blog with at least ten posts pre-planned
*eat all of our meals at home
    *drink more water

  3. So true for all of these! I like the idea of breaking things down (I have a 101 things to do in 1001 days list, but only concentrate on a few at a time).

  4. Fabulous, good to know how to be ambitious in the better way without crashing down.

for me this week would be...
    > sort out my shelves above the bed
    > finish all my two commissions
    > rebrand my blog and website
    > start window shopping for christmas gifts
    > paint more greeting cards
    >design ideas

Hope yours go well this week!

  5. I love doing this! It makes the week so much easier and more productive!

    My week looks like this:

    - Make a hair appointment.
    - Fill a page of my sketchbook each day.
    - Listen to three dharma talks this week.
    - Make at least three blog posts.
    - Drink two liters of water each day.

Just some easy stuff, but I know I'd put it off if I didn't commit at the beginning of the week to doing it.

  6. Thanks for these tips! Right now I'm having one of those weeks where you feel like you aren't accomplishing anything, so I will make my list and hopefully it will help me accomplish more this week:

    - Sale five houses (I am a sales manager and my team is just not performing how I want them to)
    - Start exercising (my wedding is next month, and I am not exercising as I should... actually, not exercising at all is more accurate hehe)
    - Finalize some wedding details that still need sorting out
    - Be a lot more patient with my son and fiancé
    - Complete five blog posts this week (so far I've done 2... 3 to go!)

These five things would definitely make me feel very happy and motivated to do better in those areas of my life...

  7. I've been making weekly lists as well and I've definitely noticed a difference between making an item of something I've been wanting to accomplish/bring into my life and throwing something down just to fill a number. Even if I complete all of the things in that second category, it just doesn't fill me up the same way as the more meaningful tasks!

  8. Reading your Intentions posts and my own thoughts on trying to be more mindful and think more about spending and what I'm getting and everything has kind of inspired me to write my own blog post. I'm kind of writing like a fiend right now to get the post up tonight.

My list will be on my post; it's short ubt... each item is kind of time consuming, so I'm going to say it counts, haha.

I am loving these posts, and I am loving your honesty about what you're managing to get done and what you're not. Keep doing them!

  9. :D Ever since You posted Your first intentions list, I started mentally jotting down ones. But I haven't been really sticking to them. Tomorrow I'm starting a pen and pad list :D

Loads and loads of love to this blog, SJay

  10. This is something I've needed to read for awhile now actually. I've been so down on myself for feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to start putting myself together. I think I will start doing this list, so thanks for posting about it!

  11. I absolutely love this. A lot of the time I find myself making goal lists or to-do lists that are so difficult to accomplish that I just wind up disappointing myself. I set out to wake up far earlier than is healthy for me (based on when I go to bed...usually a bit too late) and when I hear my alarm in the morning I just give up and keep sleeping. I'm so hard on myself whenever I fail to reach a goal that I think it's about time I stop focusing on goals and start focusing on intentions. I'd like to be less hard on myself, allow myself to devote more time to blogging, and start going to bed earlier. I think these are some intentions I can keep. :) Thanks for this post! It really helped.

  13. I've been making monthly lists, but I usually put off doing a good chunk of it until the end of the month. Maybe I should try weekly like you've been doing!

  14. Great post!! I'm a total list person and can get way too involved with making them. I do find that my "to do" lists are usually geared to work or getting ready for vacations (or drawing up monthly budgets). I like the idea of intentions. My "at home" intentions have been to make the bed every morning and to do laundry and have it folded AND put away promptly. I am also trying to intentionally make breakfast and lunches, instead of just eating out all the time or hitting up Starbucks. My new intentions are to figure out some blog stuff (as I'm still really new to it) I want to figure out how to make and add the proper social media buttons in my colour scheme and figure out what rss actually is and how to use it!

  15. This was a great post-- totally what I needed. I've tried making a "so-and-so before next year" type list... and yeah. It was very forced and ultimately depressing because I didn't end up doing a single thing on the list. Whoops.

    My goals for the week:
    1. At least attempt to read a book. I haven't read a book since my son was born. I only read magazines that we stack in the bathroom and read on the toilet (I can't believe I just admitted that but HEY. It's the only time I have any privacy.)
    2. Take more pictures. For blog posts, of my son, random things... I don't care. Let's just get those creative juices flowing!
    3. Make [separate] list of who I still need to buy presents for... and not leave it until last minute!
    4. Vacuum the carpet. Not much more explanation available.

  17. I found your blog through Buttons & Blossom's links to love - and I'm so glad! Sometimes I get so overwhelmed by things I want to do, changes I want to make etc, and you've inspired me to break it down into manageable chunks. Can't wait to read more of your blog!
