// Pencil Me In

Penciled In
THIS DRESS IS MADE UP OF PENCIL SHAVINGS! I mean, not like literally made of it, but the pattern! The pattern is the most adorable, colorful pencil shavings! I don't even know why I'm so excited about it, but I am. For some reason the pattern didn't register to me when I first found it, but it was such a pleasant surprise upon opening. Someone on Instagram mentioned it was a very "Mrs. Frizzle" dress and I can't argue with that. Don't even get me started on the ruffle detail at the top. Ahh! I decided to go full throttle with the brightest pink cardigan I own and matching lipstick to boot. If only I had found the most perfect shade of pink nail polish a day sooner! (I'll have to share more on that later). I topped it off with a wooden ampersand brooch (it seemed to fit the academic theme) and 'K' typewriter pendant necklace, It was a nice, Spring-appropriate outfit to wear on Monday to Toby's teeball practice. Though it was a bit windy here and there... luckily I was wearing running shorts under my dress haha Old habits die hard I guess.

Yesterday we shipped out all 50+ Kaelah's Closet orders! Be on the lookout if you ordered anything. There are still a few items up for grabs on the first 3 pages if you're interested. I'll go in there this week and delete all of the sold items, too. Today I'll be launching a client blog design, finishing up the last of a client identity + web pack, and then maybe even venturing to the next town over to finally get those pesky cabinet hinges. I think we're just a couple days out from having a decent looking kitchen haha Gotta hide all of our crap before people come over this week! Speaking of this weekend, Toby has his first teeball game on Saturday! Ahh, I am so excited. I'll have to share loads of pictures because he's the most precious thing out there. (I'm biased!) It's so crazy to me that we're parents of a kid on an organized sports team... with regular practices and a lot of games this season! We even have to take snacks to one of the games... what?! Blows my mind daily.

So I've been desperately trying to break the bad habit of biting my nails... In fact, I've been trying for probably a decade now. Nothing works. At most I get 2 weeks out because I get a gel manicure and I refuse to bite $40 off of my fingers, but then something will happen (they chip, or the polish wears off) and then it's back to biting I go. I've made it about a week or so on my right hand, and maybe like 4 days on my left (so sad! I know!) BUT I'm hoping some of y'all have overcome the gross habit and can share your words of wisdom?! What did you do? I don't want long nails by any means, but just you know... not tiny little stubs! haha HALP!

  1. I used to be a nail biter! I'm always a lip chewer. Whenever I'm anxious, stressed, over thinking, etc you know because I'm chewing away at my lips or I have a spot on them where I've bitten them raw. So gross (and embarrassing).

I've completely stopped nail biting (and nail chewing and picking) by realizing it's a nervous tick and focusing on WHY I was biting versus the actual biting and low and behold - I haven't bitten my nails in years and years. I'm still a work in progress on lip chewing. I go through "phases".

  3. Painting your nails is super helpful, because not only do you not want to ruin it, but it makes them taste super gross. Try getting a professional manicure - you DEFINITELY won't want to mess up a $20 paint job! That helped me a lot. And oh my gosh, that pencil shaving dress! I die. So cute and unique!

  4. Do you know how I quit biting them!!? It was horrible at the time but now I always laugh at it: I used to bite my nails like crazy, but one day a biten nail got stucked in between my two front teeth. It was impossible to take it out, all my teeth hurt and everytime I touched it with my tongue I would gag... so yeah, that was my very last biten nail!

  5. Seriously, you have the cutest dresses!

No tips on the nail biting, I'm afraid. I'm a biter myself!

  6. I stopped biting my nails by getting acrylics and keeping them on probably longer than I was supposed to! By the time I took them off, I actually had nails that were a decent length. Of course, they were flimsy as heck and really brittle, but I filed the edges right away and just kept them painted so I wasn't tempted to bite them. Eventually the damaged bits grew out and I haven't really bitten them since!

I also recommend ALWAYS keeping a nail file with you. And I mean everywhere you go. The tiniest little flaw in my nail will make me bite it off, but as long as I file it smooth right away I don't have a problem!

  8. Oh man. I tried to stop biting my nails for years, too. I was working at a school and one day a parent came in and told me that it made a bad impression to see me biting my nails at my desk and that it was kind of gross. He was a jerk so I kept biting to spite him but then decided that it was kind of gross and eventually quit by painting color on my nails (vs clear) and not liking how they looked chipped/chewed. You may or may not have your moment but I hope no one is mean and judgmental to you about it!

Love the pencil shavings dress, btw.

  9. I've been a nail biter so long that I don't even realize that I'm doing it! Nothing has helped. Fake nails, polish, that bitter stuff you put on, filing, chewing gum....Nothing has helped me. Hopefully you can find something that works for you!

  10. I was a longtime nail biter too. The only thing that stops me is having my nails painted all the time. I usually have to refresh every week, but I enjoy the process. Also key for me is taking the time to file my nails down. It's makes them stronger and less likely to break which helps curb the bite the nail off urge.

I love the Mrs. Frizzle reference... it's right on!

  11. Ahh I want your broach! Heck, I want all of your clothing. I love your style. :)
The only way I can keep from biting my nails is getting acrylics. If they're pretty and really strong (and I know I spent money on them), I usually don't touch them. :P I have a problem where if my polish starts chipping, I've got to peel it off, which only leads to breakage. :/ I hate the cycle my nails go through, sometimes; it's a butt!

  13. Although I haven't completely kicked it, I would recommend conistently doing your nails yourself. Like If they start to flake- redo them as soon as possible. If you put the time into it- it psycologically will make you want to keep them pretty...especially if its nail art or was time consuming. Also if you keep your nails short- it makes you less likely to nibble.

  14. What a gorgeous dress! I'm in love! And that cardigan looks perfect with it! You're so pretty. <3

Ooh! Biting nails is the worst! I've battled with it for years, too. The only thing that really works for me is keeping them painted - then they look too cute to bite! Also keeping the filed - if there's a rough edge on my nail I will try to "fix it" which never, ever ends well! >.<

Good luck with kicking the bad habit! (You're gonna need it! Lol)

  15. i love, love your fashion style!!!

and yes, i have the gross/bad habit of nail biting. it's a shame b/c i could get allllll the free manicures i'd want, but it's so hard b/c i bite mine like crazy!!!! i've heard of gel stuff too but i highly doubt it'd work. i've had gel fake nails & bite that off. i'm a wreck!!!

  19. The trick to stop biting is hot sauce. Putting EXTREMELY hot sauce on your fingertips for 5 minutes a day everyday will stop you from biting.it worked on me and i used to bite them down to practically nothing!

  21. I've been a nail biter since growing teeth/fingernails, and my daddy still does! the thing that helps me the most is keeping them polished. i'll change my nail polish every 1-2 days if i have to. and when i'm not polished, i buff to keep them shiny, and always always have a nail file! and when it chips, just spend the rest of the day scraping it off. it covers the obsessive compulsive part of nail biting, without losing the length! haha. it should be said though, you'll cover every surface in flakes of glitter/pink/red/black/mint etc, but no biting :)

  23. The only way I could stop biting my nails, after 30 years of doing it, was getting a tongue ring and being so terrified of getting germs in my mouth from chewing on my fingers - didn't want my tongue to fall off!

I mean, really - totally not how that works. And yet - here I am, 4 years out.

  24. Keeping my nails painted keeps me from biting most of the time. If I'm really stressed it might not stop me, but 97% of the time if my nails look nice I won't bite. If they start to chip, repaint them! I've been biting on and off for ever, but the past couple years I've been good as long as I keep them painted. It's really hard. I understand.

Also, this dress! What a fun print! I definitely get the Mrs. Frizzle inspiration.

  25. I just came across your lovely blog today, and I'm really enjoying it! I, too, am in the process of trying to stop biting my nails. So far, I've just been diligently painting them every week, and the fact that they're not stubs anymore has been encouraging me to stick with it. I'm on week 5 now!

Also, I love this dress - I've always been a bit obsessed with school supply-ish things :)
