Guilty Pleasures: TV Shows

I know I've written a post on tv shows before, my favorites and inquiring about y'alls. But I thought it'd be fun to poll all of the new readers we have, too! Mike and I are obsessed with Dexter. I remember buying the first season on DVD right before I went to Europe for a few weeks. I planned on watching it on the plane ride into Budapest. Instead, I watched half of one episode and then decided it wasn't for me. Something didn't click. It wasn't until the following year that I gave it another go since Mike was insistent. From then on, we'd try and squeeze in as many episodes as we could in that unusually-cold winter. (Sometimes we'd watch as many as six or seven in one sitting! We'd stay up until 6am watching them!) Of course the show has slowed quite a bit, and the first 3 or 4 seasons were undoubtedly the best, but we're sticking it out through all 8! Who caught season 6's finale the other night?!? Whoa!

Anyway, my parents gifted us some of the seasons DVDs and now all we lack is Season 3. Mike really wants to rewatch all of them (!!!) but I'm just not sure I have it in me! Do you like to rewatch tv series?! I always wondered if that was a strange thing to do... I'm not sure why. Anyway.

Since Dexter was coming to an end, we decided to start watching Mad Men on Netflix. I've avoided Mad Men like the plague simply because everyone is always fawning over it (How rebellious of me!) but we got really into it. It's amazing how quickly we flew through 4 seasons! We'd watch an episode or two before bed every night and before I knew it, I knew the entire history of all the characters and I'm eagerly awaiting season 5 in March. I've seen a lot of chatter about Breaking Bad on Twitter lately so we started that a few days ago. We just finished season 1 last night and we're hoping it picks up a bit as some of the episodes are a little slow.

We both really like to find shows that have a ton of episodes/seasons so we can catch up and really get into it. It's hard to commit to a show when it first begins and you have to wait a week for a new episode (We do really like Whitney and Two Broke Girls though!)  We don't get to sit down and enjoy much tv very often, so just squeezing in an episode before bed has become quite the nightly tradition around here. Though I'll admit my all time favorite tv shows are probably Felicity (!!!) + NCIS (Fun fact: We have 181 episodes of NCIS on our DVR. Yowza!)

So my question for all of y'all: Do you have any tv shows you absolutely love? Bonus points if they're on Netflix Instant! (*cue everyone saying Doctor Who!* haha)

  1. I felt the same way about Mad Men! I finally broke down and watched it last fall and got completely hooked :)

    My netflix queue is almost all tv shows lol... my favorites right now are The Office, Parks and Recreation, The X-Files, Eureka, Felicity (just finished that and was totally shocked/confused by the time-travel stuff at the end of the show!!), How I Met Your Mother, NewsRadio, Twin Peaks, Dead Like Me (I just saw that one expires in January so I'm re-watching it before netflix axes it) and Arrested Development. Now that I listed all of them I feel sort of guilty for watching that much tv! haha!! :)

  2. That's how we watched Mad Men too. We fought against the hype for the first two seasons and then when we finally watched one episode - hooked! We watched two seasons in three days. :)

    We're waiting on Mad Men, The Killing and The Walking Dead to start seasons again. AMC really has us where they want us!

    The Mister is hooked on American Horror Story which is too graphic for my tastes.

  3. My husband and I don't have cable so instant Netflix is amazing! We just finished up How I Met Your Mother. We always hop around episodes of That 70s Show, and you can sometimes find me watching Gossip Girl or Law & Order: SVU. My favorite show that I can always watch over and over is Gilmore Girls DVD!

  5. Dexter is one of the best shows out there right now! It's such a guilty pleasure to watch. And the season finale, holy cow!! I can barely wait till the new season starts next fall. I have re watched the True Blood series... twice. haha. It may be weird.. but then again I reread books a lot too, Which many also find unusual! It's just as good the second time as the first though!

  6. I was totally going to say Doctor Who... lol, well fine, how about Torchwood then? =P Here are some other ones I really enjoyed: The Tudors, Vampire Diaries (surprisingly good), Bones, Angel, Grey's Anatomy, Weeds, Dollhouse, and Rescue Me. Also on instant is Buffy, which is pretty awful, but kind of fun.

  7. Ahh I wanted to say Doctor Who. I guess I will have to say Torchwood, Eureka, How I met Your Mother, Stargate SG-1, The Catherine Tate Show (sketch comedy with British humor AWESOME), Bones, Robin Hood (on instant it is the British series)and Merlin! Okay I need to stop I could go on for ever. I love syfy and BBC stuff so most on my shows are in that area.

  8. The Walking Dead is a good one and it's on Netflix. And we're hooked on The Wonder Years - on Netflix too :)

  11. Nate and I watch Sons on Anarchy, Breaking Bad, and Dexter. Those are the big shows we are watching right now. We also like to watch some anime, like Inital D. I also like True Blood, Arrested Development, The IT Crowd (British version), and have a love hate relationship with Misfits.

    just a few of my favorites!
    wow. it seems like my boyfriend and I watch a lot of tv...

  13. Dead like me... But dont watch the movie! Trust me. How I met your mother, Psyc, west wing. I watch too much but it's all Dvr or instant for me

  14. You HAVE to check out American Horror Show! Ugh! My fiance' and I had to check it out since so many of our friends wouldn't stop talking about it, and I'm so glad we did. All of the different stories and plot lines are deep, and you instantly are sucked into the show. Promise me you'll check it out? :D I downloaded the first season and am almost finished.

    I have to say, I wasn't a fan of Whitney at all. Something about having the audience there laughing every minute is a turn off. I enjoy Whitney Cumming's raw/slightly offensive comedy on other stuff though (check out Comedy Central's Roasts.)
    You might like Up All Night with Christina Applegate and Will Arnet. That's another favorite of ours. Maya Rudolph from Bridesmaids is in it as well (and who can go wrong with her?)

    Along with these shows, I'm still loving: Friends (duh!), One Born Every Minute, House Hunters, and Kenny vs. Spenny.

  15. Hubby and I don't watch Mad Men or Dexter. We feel as though we have soooo many TV shows as it is, we can't catch up on all of them. We like watching Glee (I know....lame, but that one's my favorite) and New Girl, Two Broke Girls. We also looooovve watching the Big Bang Theory and anything on the History Channel.

    We don't have Netflix, but do have cable, so we like watching anything that is "On Demand" (if you have Comcast, you know what I'm talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Six Feet Under, all time favorite show

    ReplyDelete
  17. My husband and I just started watching Friday Night Lights on Netflix Instant. We're about 3/4 of the way through the first season and I AM SO ADDICTED!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I love NCIS, Criminal Minds, and Bones. I one for one love crime shows. But my guilty pleasure when it comes to TV shows is Say yes to the dress. New York and Atlanta

    ReplyDelete
  19. my absolute all time favorite show is roswell. they have all of the episodes on netflix. i was real sad when the show ended but i think it's 5 or so seasons. so worth it. love love love.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Portlandia!!! I think you'd love it, Fred Armisen is in it and it's basically the funniest thing ever. The first season is also 6 episodes so that's not bad at all! The new season is starting up in January so I'm pretty excited! :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hubs & I watch a ton of TV. We DVR them and we love getting the DVDs and doing entire seasons/series too. Here are some of our favorites...

    Breaking Bad - Mad Men - The Killing - Boardwalk Empire - The Closer - Whitney - How I Met Your Mother - The Big Bang Theory - Dexter - Treme (Hubs is from NOLA) - Modern Family

    Old Series...

    Arrested Development - Twin Peaks - Weeds (I say this as old because the new episodes are getting lame)- The Wire (probably best series ever)

    We heard the first season of Homeland was good so we may try to squeeze that in soon.

    Clearly we need more hobbies...lol.

    ReplyDelete
  22. We have been watching Once Upon a Time, Whitney, & Suburgatory. We watch via Hulu so no help on the Netflix front. We really like Suburgatory... Chris says the girl is just like me! =D

    Love & Lollies... Jessa

    Confessions of the Cupcake Countessa

  23. I have every single episode of ncis, bones, alias, friends, doctor who (and thats a lot since it started in the 60's).. what else do i love? the new show 'once upon a time' isn't too bad either. you could try Lost or True Blood aswell. so many shows out there, it's hard to choose the best!

    ReplyDelete
  24. True Blood without a doubt. The Big Bang Theory. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Malcolm in the Middle. The Sopranos. And so many more, haha.

    ReplyDelete
  25. my favorite classics: pushing daisies, felicity, gilmore girls, twin peaks.

    my favorite newbies from this year: american horror story, revenge, hart of dixie, once upon a time.

    ReplyDelete
  26. oh geez..i love my shows!! we really got into carnivale,dexter,true blood,breaking bad,sons of anarchy,always sunny,american horror story.netflix..himym,mad men,dead like me,being human(u.k.)vampire diaries(haha)shameless(u.s,crazy) and i just started watching doctor who and walking dead!

  27. Definitely watch Arrested Development if you haven't already. It's a shame it was taken off the air.

    Also, this isn't on Netflix yet because it's new but Once Upon A Time is without a doubt my favorite new show. It is so whimsical and fabulous. Not to mention...Prince Charming is so damn cute! Dexter is my #1 but believe it or not Once Upon A Time is my #2 favorite show which is funny since they are polar opposites of each other!

    ReplyDelete
  28. My husband and I love The Tudors and watched all of Rome, too. The Closer is awesome. I adored Saving Grace and was SO sad to see it end. And Weeds and The United States of Tara are HILARIOUS in very twisted ways.

    I was in college while Felicity was at its peak and remember the major controversy about her hair cut! But what a great show. I never missed an episode. I had the biggest crush on Scott Speedman back in the day!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ahhh! I absolutely adore Felicity! That was one of my favorite shows! I'm not a Netflix-er, but my friends and I have recently gotten the Glee-bug! So addicting. I want to watch it right now. :)

    Hope you had a great holiday!

  30. Breaking Bad is aaaamazing. The second season does pick up, and each season gets increasingly intense. It is rare to find a show that just gets better and better, so stick with it!

    I have watched Arrested Development on Netflix instant several times, it never gets old!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am impatiently waiting for Netflix to get everybody loves Raymond! If you haven't watched the walking dead or Spartacus I definitely recommend them :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. LUTHER & THE BIG C.

    I was going to say Doctor Who as well (the older series, but the new ones are awesome too!). :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm a massive NCIS fan, but I haven't watched the most recent season. I'm like you - I get impatient waiting for new episodes, so I'd rather wait for a whole season to be done and then watch it all in one go.
    Definitely know what you mean about Mad Men too; I'd really like to get into it, but the 2 episodes I've seen have been so SLOW, I just haven't had the patience to stick it out.

    Shows I'd recommend? The West Wing, absolutely no question. It's phenomenal. Also Six Feet Under, although I've still not got around to finishing that myself.

    missish.blogspot.com

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don't know if it's on Netflix instant or not, but Six Feet Under is a show I can re-watch over and over. I've seen all six seasons at least three times. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it! Breaking Bad is awesome. There was a show on A & E that just ended its first season, called American Horror Story, and that was pretty awesome too.

    ReplyDelete
  35. i love dexter too. season 4 was the best. I love buffy the vampire slayer, i bet i've watched it all the way through at least 5 times. I also love gilmore girls, arrested development, 30 rock, strangers with candy, pushing daisies, the first few seasons of big love. I like watching things over and over.
    The only current show I'm really into is RuPaul's Drag Race. It is like a mix of next top model and project runway, with drag queens. I just rewatched the seasons on netflix instant. I want to start med men but I don't have time to get obsessed with anything just now. haha.

  36. Working my way through Dexter, and just polished off American Horror Story over Christmas! All good viewing!

  37. I have 2 giant DVD binders full on t.v. shows and of course Netflix :)My husband and I love to find a favorite then wait till a bunch of the seasons are really cheap at Target then have a marathon watching session complete with yummy snacks one weekend.
    But we love Dexter, The Walking Dead, Hell on Wheels, NCIS, Weeds, American Horror Story, HIMYM, Burn Notice, White Collar, Buffy, Angel, The Sopranos, Entourage, The Tudors, The Borgias, True Blood, Homeland, and so many more that are escaping me right now.

    Sex and the City!
    Arrested Development!
    One Tree Hill!

  39. I lovvvveeee biggest loser, once upon a time, and the cosby show:)

    ReplyDelete
  40. American Horror Story FOR SURE! But also The Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Doctor Who!!! lol But seriously, I watch WAYYYY TOO MANY shows to be considered healthy, I'm not kidding. Something like 30 currently airing fall shows. Some of my favourites are Castle, NCIS, Modern Family, Parks&Rec, Community, Person of Interest, The Mentalist, The Vampire Diaries, Mad Men, White Collar... and I'd better stop now. lol I don't often rewatch series... maybe if they're really worth it, like Firefly.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't usually post because I usually have nothing to important to say but you must watch sons of anarchy. At first I thought I wouldn't like it and then i got so into it. The first two seasons are on instant cue!

  43. Some of my current and constant obsessions are:
    - Damages. You MUST try this one if you try anything. Great thriller!
    - The Good Wife.
    - Ringer.
    - Homeland. It is on right after Dexter and is a great action combo.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one show I can watch over and over again - but I feel like I must watch it in order. If I catch a re-run on TV... I feel the need to go back to the beginning of that season and watch them through. True Blood was another one we decided to give into - much like you said with Mad Men I didn't want to watch it at first - who needs another Vampire show but we were hooked...even though now it seems to be lagging a bit.

    I want to start watching Mad Men. Dexter was one I liked but didn't love and the husband was not 100% about it either so we gave up.

    Is DVR not the most magical thing? Ours is clogged up with records of Anthony Bordain, Man vs. Food and American Pickers!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I tried watching Dexter & for the life of me couldn't get into it. Whenever (if ever) it comes back to instant play on Netflix, I'll give it another go! But my other favs are The Walking Dead (instant play, oh yeah), Twin Peaks (also on instant), Big Bang Theory and that's pretty much it. Not a huge tv gal, but if I find something good, I watch it!

    xo.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I forgot to mention Game of Thrones, and I don't think anyone else has suggested it yet... it is amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I always rewatch shows I've loved, I just can't help it. On Christmas Eve I watched a bunch of the Christmas episodes of 'The Office' even though I've seen them all probably 5 times each.

    I've started watching 'The X-Files' on and off, I watched it a bit when I was younger but not from beginning to end. 'Sex and the City' (not on netflix instant viewing) is a show I have practically memorized and its funny too because I don't typically watch shows like SATC.

    Some of my all time favorite shows are 'Rome', 'Deadwood', 'Archer', and I'm really into 'Boardwalk Empire' at the moment. I have yet to actually watch 'Dexter' or 'Mad Men' although I plan to! I always wait too long to watch shows.

  48. First off: Can I just say thank you for not giving any Dexter spoilers?! I saw a season 6 gif series on Tumblr that totally blew me away and NO ONE CALLED SPOILER ALERT! Jerks. haha.

    Off the top of my head, I like:
    * Arrested Development
    * Up All Night
    * Always Sunny
    * The Walking Dead
    * Beavis and Butt-head
    * The Big Bang Theory
    * Queer as Folk
    * Archer
    * Louie
    * My husband really likes Two Broke Girls and How I Met Your Mother but I haven't seen either...

    I could watch and watch and re-watch Extras and The Ricky Gervais show. It just never stops being funny.

    I know that there's more but I'm brain dead right now.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh man, LOVE Dexter. I haven't seen the finale yet but I can't WAIT. And we love Arrested Development, 30 Rock, Portlandia (only 7 episodes though)...I'm sure there are more!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm not really into the whole hour-long drama thing. I watched a few seasons of Gossip Girl but never got around to finishing it. And Mad Men lasted a season and a half for me. My favourite shows are more along the lines of Community, How I Met Your Mother and The Office. And of course, my guilty pleasure, America's Next Top Model! Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I loved Felicity too!!! I was obsessed with it. I also used to like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Beverly Hills 90210. :)

    My current favorites are Mad Men, Always Sunny in Philidelphia, Weeds, The C Word and Bored to Death.

  55. I'm obsessed with British television!!! I watch Merlin, Skins, Misfits, Sherlock, Downton Abbey, Trollied and probably more that I can't think of.

    Of American tv, I absolutely LOVE Castle!! I can't get enough! Also, Vampire Diaries, Big Bang Theory, Person of Interest, Fringe, and Once Upon a Time!

    Once Upon A Time (hulu)
    Arrested Development (netflix)
    Parks and Rec (netflix/hulu)
    Jeeves and Wooster (Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry! <3) We love Mad Men and Dexter. I hear Pan Am is like a more female Mad Men but with espionage and the cold war thrown in.

  57. Oh, and I LOVE rewatching shows! It is very comforting to me. Plus, if you need to clean or something and it is on in the background, it is fine if you only half pay attention but sometimes you pick up different things. I am an avid book rereader as well. You have a different perspective when you read something again and I think the experience is good for the mind.

  59. I love Dexter and I did re-watch it again! I tried Mad Men and watched like 4 episodes but never got into it. I've been hooked on How I Met Your Mother for weeks and had refused to watch it because it's the favorite show of this girl I hate(harsh?) and it always reminded me of her haha. I watch a crap ton of The Office, That 70's show, Parks and Rec, Friends, ect. Everyone talks about Doctor Who but I still haven't watched it. I started watching The Walking Dead a few weeks ago and I LOVE it!

    Also, Target has Dexter on sale for 14.99 right now, so you should get season 3!

    As far as other shows, I got really into The Biggest Loser on Netflix. All the seasons are on there so I've had something to watch for a while now. Boy Meets World is another one I watch Dvds of :) It will always be one of my favs!

  67. We love Dexter too. Since we've had a child, series nights are the more convenient ways we found to have sort of date nights:) And yes, the season finale was so cruel! how long will we have to wait to see what happens next!!
    Otherwise, we are watching Nikita, a new series called Terra Nova which is not so bad, Tru Blood, Games of Thrones... oh and if you don't know it, I do recomment the IT crowd. Soo funny!
    on my own I love One Tree Hill, HIMYM, I am waiting to see Mildred Pierce also. And with my BFF, friday nights are dedicated to watch Ally McBeal from the start:)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Huge fan of Dexter!!! This finale was a nail biter, especially at the end! Waaahh!!

    I would suggest my favorite show of all time 'Roswell'- but I don't know if it's on Netflix, most likely? If you're into aliens and lovey stuff...

    ReplyDelete
  69. My favorite show ever is The West Wing. I've watched it all of the way through twice and probably watched 75% of it while syndicated on Bravo.

    I'm currently working my way through Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I watched it sporadically when it was airing, but now I'm ridiculously obsessed, ordered some of the comics, have a Buffy mug.

    And HBO was my favorite ever in HS. Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, even early Entourage.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I love How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, and White Collar! Oh, and Bones!

  71. I screamed like a crazy person at the season finale of Dexter!! I can't wait till the next season!! AHHHH I need to know NOWWWWW!!

    Ha! I'm not the only one! I love re-watching tv series over and over. I have quite a few shows that for the heck of it, I rewatch all the way from the beginning: Fringe, Bones, House, whatever's on Netflix instant...etc. Extremely excited HIMYM is now on Instant!! I have Big Bang Theory and Always Sunny in my dvd queue too!

    And I watch Venture Brothers on Adult Swim constantly. I've seen each episode a couple dozen times but I can't help throw on an episode while I paint my nails. :)

  72. My boyfriend and I LOVE Dexter. Good show on netflix? Bones. It's crime scene/comedy, and if you want just straight comedy, That 70s Show is always an option.

    Whitney
    New Girl
    and Grimm.
    I could watch Roseanne or Fresh Prince of Bel-Air over & over and not get sick of it. Or Unsolved Mysteries.
    I've been kinda rebellious like you about Mad Men. And Breaking Bad. Only because everybody & their momma is talking about it/watching it right now. I think I'll let the hoopla die down a bit. :)

  79. i love tv series and movies! i used to not really care for tv shows, but i was a HUGE fan of six feet under (still probably my favorite series to date). since then, i've branched out and now i watch a lot of shows. Dexter is close second, the series has been amazing thus far. season 4 with the trinity killer has been my favorite! i cannot believe season 6 ended like that!!!! deb isn't going to say anything because she's in love with him... CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASON 7.
