Nashville Shores has become one of our very favorite places to spend the day this summer. Along with Whitney and her crew, we bought seasons passes and we're putting them to good use. We've already been 3 times in June (one of those times Whitney and I went alone haha! Shh!) and we're thinking about heading back this week again. I know the photos don't look like it, but I swear my other kid was there too! :P Toby and CJ stayed on the waterslides non-stop so we maybe saw them for about 15 minutes total. Linden and I took it easy over in the kiddie pool. He hated it for the first 2 hours - he just clung to me and whined (and ate snacks). Finally once I got him to stand up and realize the water was only 1' deep, he was all about it. He started going down the slide and he didn't stop until I forced him to leave. That photo of him up there in the little umbrella stroller is the perfect depiction of how we all felt when we finally left.

Every time we go Toby ends up saying "This was the best day of my life!" and I can't help but find that totally magical and adorable. Totally a win!

// Summer Bucket List: Adventures with Toby

I love the idea of Summer bucket lists… or any kind of bucket list I guess. I just like lists, really. To do lists, grocery lists, you name it. But even better is when they’re adventure lists. Fun things I want to do with someone I love. At the beginning of last week I had tweeted that I was hoping to make a Summer bucket list for me and Toby to try and do before the baby comes next month (!!!). Nothing fancy or elaborate, but little dates that we could share together. Part of my 26 Before 27 goal list this year was to go on at least one Mom + Toby date each month, and this is sort of an extension of that. I know we’ll be stuck at the house a lot more once this baby comes and I don’t want him to get too bored or discouraged. He’s almost six years old (what!) and he needs to have the opportunity to behave like one, right?

A few people suggested some really great ideas and I slowly built my own little list of things I want to do with Toby. Again, the list isn’t overwhelming or too lofty since being 8.5 months pregnant means I move at a much slower pace than a 5 year old, but I think it’ll suit us just fine. Here’s what we came up with:

1. Park dates!

I try to take Toby to the local park regularly just so he can stretch his legs, climb on all sorts of contraptions, and socialize with kids his age despite it being Summer. Even though I can’t hang on the monkey bars with him, it gives us both a chance to get out of the house and get some fresh air.

2. Froyo!

Toby loves him some frozen yogurt and he thinks it’s such a treat when we go because he gets to get his own cup, choose his own flavors, and pull the little yogurt levels to fill up his bowl. That kid can put away the stuff fast, too!

3. Mid-day pool parties!

Once this yucky, wet weather clears out, I’m hoping we can make it a priority to pop over to my parents’ pool for part of the day, at least a few times a week. I could use the sunshine (and weightless feeling!) and Toby could use the energy-draining ha! He’s always so tuckered out from the fun and sun when we get home that he takes a nap, so that’ll allow me the opportunity to have some uninterrupted work time. Win/win! (Unless I take a nap, too…)

4. Pick wildflowers!

Toby loves to pick flowers for the ladies in his life. He’s constantly bringing them to me (as seen here), my mom, nana, and Grammie Terri. I thought it’d be a fun little adventure to hop in the car, head out into the countryside and find as many lovely wildflowers as we can. I’m a sucker for my weekly bouquet of flowers, but who can say no to fresh flowers that are free?!

5. Bake something!

Another thing Toby loves to do is help in the kitchen. He’s fascinated by the Kitchenaid mixer and he’s a pretty good taste tester. Plus enjoying the fruits of your labor is kind of awesome.

6. Berry picking!

>This one will be a little bit harder to do since we don’t really have any nearby berry farms. I could cheat and say “Oh we do this all the time in my mom’s strawberry patch!” but I want to take him somewhere more established. He devours blueberries, raspberries and blackberries like they’re candy, so I know he’d love it!

7. Make popsicles!

The perfect excuse for a sweet, frozen treat this Summer! I’ve been collecting a few recipe ideas for us to try out, so if they turn out well, I’ll be sure to share them on here, too!

8. Disposable camera adventures!

This is one of my favorite things to do with Toby! Since Mike and I are film photography lovers, we want to share that same magic with Toby. Of course we can’t just give him our Nikon film bodies and let him shoot (1 - because they’re heavy! and 2 - each roll of film costs about $50-$60 to develop!) Luckily he can snap away on a little $4 disposable and sort of get the same effect… at least for now. We want him to experience the thrill of not knowing what’s on the roll, and the excitement of seeing the processed film for the first time. We’d like to think it’ll teach him not to be so concerned with instant gratification, but he is only five and we maybe idealize it a bit! haha

9. Morning “coffee” date!

When Mike and I would regularly drink our coffee on the front porch each morning, Toby begged to have “coffee” so he could join us. We’d let him choose his daily coffee mug and we’d fill it up with chocolate milk, then sit on the porch and enjoy the crisp morning air. I think that’s the perfect way to start the day and since it’s just me and Toby here in the mornings, I want to share that little tradition with him again.

10. Cook dinner for Dad!

Since Mike works so hard at school every day, I think it’d be nice if Toby and I treated him to a yummy, home cooked meal one evening. I’m no Monica in the kitchen but I think we could whip up something that is at least edible… ha! We’re aiming high here, people!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Who’s to say that all of these will get accomplished, or that we won’t nix some and replace them with something even better? Who knows! But I want to bottle up this short time that we have left as a family of three and make as many memories as possible. I know things will be amazing when there are four of us, but Toby will only be 5 for a couple more months… He’s growing up so fast! I want him to be able to look back and see just how much fun we had when he was little.

If you have any fun suggestions to add to our list, I’m all ears! I know I’ll think of things as the days progress but I’ll never turn down some help! I’ll try to remember to document a little bit of each adventure to share here, but let’s be real - it’s usually easier to just live in the moment, right?

// Holding Onto Summer - My (Last Minute) End of Summer Goals

Yesterday Mike and I took an hour long cat nap in the hammock under the big oak tree in our backyard. There are seriously no words to describe how peaceful and serene it was. I'm hoping we can squeeze in another nap in the shade today in between work projects and packing since we head out for North Carolina tomorrow. I'm trying to hold on to every last piece of Summer that I can, although I'm loving the fact that all of our windows are open and I can drink my coffee on the front porch with my morning work without breaking a sweat. September is almost perfect.

As much as I'm looking forward to apple orchards and cider recipes, each falling leaf sends a pang through me. Tennessee is absolutely beautiful in Autumn, but I'm just not ready to see the bare trees. The beautiful, colorful season is so short and fleeting... then it's 6 or 7 straight months of empty branches.

I know there's technically only 3 days of Summer left, but there's so much that I want to do before Autumn is in full swing. A few things I hope to accomplish this week:
  1. (Another) hammock nap
  2. Picnic
  3. Fro-yo date
  4. Documenting the environment on film
  5. Drive with the windows down and the music up
  6. Roadtrip (!!!)
  7. Put my feet in the Atlantic Ocean
  8. Stay up late laughing with friends
  9. See a new city
Some of those aren't necessarily Summer specific, but they definitely make me think of the season. The good news is that I'm on track to accomplish every single one of them before the official end of Summer! I just want to soak up every last little bit of it...

How about you? Anything you want to do/see/accomplish before Summer leaves us?!

// Summer Roadtrip Essentials

Roadtrip Essentials - Kaelah Bee
We're headed to Florida in just 3 days and I'm ecstatic! We're driving the RV (and towing the Jeep behind) so we'll be able to lounge around on the bed/couch while haulin' down the interstate. Just knowing that we won't be cramped up in one small SUV (like last year in my Xterra) makes me breathe a sweet sigh of relief! I've been trying to plan what I'll be packing, but let's be honest here - I'm a last minute kind of gal... I don't even have the first thing sorted out haha! Instead I just waste time making lists like this. It's all good! Here are my summer roadtrip essentials!

You know what I mean... the ones that sit lightly on your nose and don't make your face sweat. Haha I really love the shape of these, and tortoise is my far my favorite shade!

2 // Headphones!
It's inevitable that someone is going to want to listen to music you're just not into (this is especially true if you're traveling with family... which we are. Love you, Mom!). Sometimes it's nice to just quietly jam out by yourself. (I guess my family doesn't love female singer/songwriters as much as I do... heh)

Maxi dresses are perfect for roadtrips. You still feel free and comfy, but you're also covered up. I like to put my feet up on the dash (totes dangerous, I know) but I don't want to flash all of the truck drivers we pass. Maxis are the best of both worlds, yea? This black and white number would be perfect with bright accessories! (Real talk: I picked up 4 lightweight, cotton sundresses at Walmart of all places the other day... $9! They're so comfortable and perfect for lounging by the pool or whatever. I love them!)

4 // Sandals
Saltwaters are the perfect example of a comfy Summer shoe! You might end up with some interesting tan lines, but at least you won't get blisters! (I really like that the leather is stretchy enough to just slip on rather than unbuckling 'em to wear!) #lazylyf

5 // Tote bag
An oversized tote bag is the perfect Summer bag! Toss in your beach blanket, sandy shoes, and a bottle of water. Pick up some fresh fruit from a roadside stand. Load it up with souvenirs from the boardwalk! Bonus points if it's loud and bright like this one!

6 // iPad + iPhone
Games, Netflix, and Spotify (hey #8!) are just a few reasons why these gadgets are the perfect roadtrip companions. You can also snap some quick on-the-road photos for your customized hashtag on Instagram! (Yeah, you know what I'm talking about!) You have to Instagram the crap out of your trip. otherwise it didn't happen, right?! ;)

Mike and I are film photographers at heart and we love us some fancy photo lab processing... but disposable cameras have this raw, unfiltered feeling about them! Even the grainy, out of focus photos can be treasured memories. I love to purposefully alter the functionality of disposables in order to get cool effects. Plus it's neat to develop them after your trip and sort of relive all of the captured moments!

8 // Spotify!
Spotify is essential for any road trip! The $10 "Premium" account is worth every penny. That way your entire Library (and the entire Spotify database) is available on your phone/iPad in the car! No need to spend your pennies at iTunes!

9 // Scarves
Lightweight scarves are the perfect summer accessory because you can tie your hair up, wear it as a swimsuit coverup, use it as an impromptu pillow or blanket, or top off any casual outfit for a jaunt around town. Don't limit yourself to wearing scarves only in the wintertime!

10 // (Guilty Pleasure) Beverages
Gotta stay hydrated, right?! Roadtrips are a fun excuse to indulge just a little bit! My roadtrip indulgences are totally SunDrop and iced coffee! Mike prefers Red Bull (but I hate the smell so much! Can't be in the same car with it haha!)

11 // Truck stop blankets!
Am I the only person who really really loves the cheap truck stop blankets that you can get for like $6?! They're so cheap and usually really pretty! They make great beach/picnic blankets, too. And you don't have to feel guilty about ruining an expensive/sentimental quilt.

12 // Swimsuit
If you're headed to the beach or anywhere with a pool, a rad bathing suit is a must! I love this retro inspired two-piece! Sunbathing in style!

13 // Snacks!
Just like my guilty pleasure drinks, I've got my snack choices, too! Mike is all about the sour gummy worms, and I love me some Cheez-its!

I usually limit my tabloid reading (err, buying) to three occasions: at the gym, on the road, or at the tattoo shop. I've had an Us Weekly subscription for nearly 2 years now and it's one of the only tabloids I don't feel guilty reading haha

15 // Cash moneyyyy!
Gotta have some cash on hand for the little roadside stands and mom-and-pop type shops you might run across. You don't want to miss the chance to pick up some local, fresh fruit or that uber tacky (but amazing!) souvenir at the truck stop.

I'd say that's a pretty comprehensive list of what I like to throw into my bags. How about you? Feel free to share some of your absolute, must have, summer roadtrip essentials in the comments below! You might help me remember something I forgot! xo

Sweet Summertime

Hi honeybees! Sorry for the crickets over on this little blog. Seems I've taken sickly the past few days. An annoying cough has turned chronic, my voice has gone on vacation, and the constant jolt from all of this hacking has left me with a migraine. Always lovely yes? I had to leave work early last night and I've spent the past 3 days sipping on Robitussin DM and Ibuprofen. I'm sure it'll pass soon though! Memorial Day weekend is generally the start of all of the summer shindigs and weekends spent at the river, so I'm celebrating by rounding up a few images that have me pumped for the heatwave coming our way! I'm also going to leave you with a very favorite song of mine (video included!). "In This Diary" by The Ataris is probably my soundtrack to the summer every year! Nothing gets me in the mood for road trips, windows down, with friends like that song...

I want to stop being sick so I can enjoy all of this sunshine in the pool with a lemonade and loud music!

What are your favorite songs for summer?
How are you planning on spending your summer months?!
