// Things I Love Thursday v.135

*Please forgive the wonky font size down in the Links! Blogger is so finnicky.

*(Edited to add: Please note that there is a very powerful/heavy image in the middle of this TiLT post re: Bangladesh factory collapse. It's not the typical LCH TiLT post material, but I feel that it's a very powerful image and deserves to be shared. I decided against merely linking it in the post because (to me) it sends a very intense message. I failed to offer any warning when the post was first published, but understand the stance of my surprised readers. The image is graphic, though not gory.)
these cats who think they're sushi! ♥
these luminous creatures captured by underwater photographer joshua lambus ♥

// I really love this post. It's so easy to judge people, parents especially, for every day things. I love that this mother + daughter can share these photos + memories for life.
I firmly believe in small gestures: pay for their coffee, hold the door for strangers, over tip, smile or try to be kind even when you don’t feel like it, pay compliments, chase the kid’s runaway ball down the sidewalk and throw it back to him, try to be larger than you are— particularly when it’s difficult. People do notice, people appreciate. I appreciate it when it’s done to (for) me. Small gestures can be an effort, or actually go against our grain (“I’m not a big one for paying compliments…”), but the irony is that almost every time you make them, you feel better about yourself. For a moment life suddenly feels lighter, a bit more Gene Kelly dancing in the rain.- Joshua Carroll
// This woman channelled the death of her mother into a memorial photo project that is absolutely breathtaking. All of the colors, textures, and thought put into the frames is unreal.

// Some of the things being said about Angelina Jolie in the news of her double mastectomy is absolutely disgusting. It blows my mind that people actually think this way.

// Am I allowed to want literally everything on Fab right now?! Because I do. Sometimes I just have to avoid it all together.

// This is definitely a new kind of inclusion in my TiLT posts, but what about a porn site that has a new kind of mission? One that is working to help offer an alternative (and real) approach to sex education? It exists! And it's the brain child of a woman! You go girl.

// SHUT UP. SHUT UP. SHUT UP! John Krasinski lipsynching to Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" -- This is the best thing!

// As if you needed any more reason to pick up all of the amazeballs jewelry at The Northern Sea, they now offer 100% FREE shipping in the US of A! Can I offer you some suggestions? Anchor studs (they come in so many colors!) -- this midi ring -- this arrow bracelet

// "Thrift Store Gore" is a hilarious feature and this one did not disappoint! Oh my stars.

// A really interesting breakdown about the now-viral article about wealthy families "renting" disabled tour guides in order to skip lines at Disney.

// What The Parenting Books Don't Tell You: Three Year Olds Are Jerks. (Spoiler alert: 4 year olds, too... sometimes haha But gosh they're precious.)

// I'd go crazy at a huge plant stand like this! I've been obsessed with our little garden lately.

What are you loving this week?

There are no words for that photo from the Bangladesh factory collapse. I cannot imagine the horror they experienced.

  9. when my husband's mother passed away last february we flew to arizona for her memorial service. i saw a bunch of suckers with scorpions at the gift shop in the airport and had to bring one back to my five year old. :) i actually think it's still in my kitchen drawer. he thought it was cool, but i think he was secretly scared that it was still alive and might attack him if he bit into it.

    1. I'm going to just copy and paste my response from below.

I did consider posting a link rather than the image itself, but in the end decided that at the end of the day, we don't get "trigger warnings" for world happenings. I feel strongly about that photo and what it brings to light. While the story of the Bangladesh collapse definitely struck a chord with me, it was made so much more "real" by that very image. I reasoned it with this: my readers are strong, worldly women and I feel they (you) are capable of handling such an image. There's no graphic "gore" though the subject of the photo is very, very shocking - especially in the structure of this post. Normally "shocking" bits are reserved for the links and the images are lighthearted and sweet. I can understand your stance, but I feel okay with my decision to share it. I hope you understand. My sincerest apologies if you feel otherwise, or if this makes you weary of returning to LCH.

  15. Soo I love your blog and your honest voice but I find myself needing to express this. I was very haunted by that image from the rubble of the factory. It is so very sad and very powerful. So much so that I wish I had not seen it but because I love your blog and usual content I didn't think I would see something so disturbing. Maybe for those aren't ready for such imagery, you could provide a link to the image instead of the image? I really would have rather had a choice in seeing such a photo.

    1. Thanks for your comment Erika. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to leave a sincere and well thought out point. I did consider posting a link rather than the image itself, but in the end decided that at the end of the day, we don't get "trigger warnings" for world happenings. With that being said, perhaps I'll err on the side of caution next time I have something that's not so "fluffy" for the blog. I'll most certainly take your comment into consideration.

    2. Thank you for taking the time to reflect on my comment. Your thoughtfulness and good heart is why I enjoy your blog so much. I respect you decision to share the image and as haunting as both the image and tragedy are, I know something good will come out of the story being shared. People need to be informed so that we can help each other. :)

    3. Thank you for being so understanding and willing to see my side of the coin. I can't tell you how much I appreciate kind gals like you who make LCH a part of your day (and aren't afraid to speak up when something prompts you to!). I value conversations like these and I think they make us all better people in the end. xo

  18. Hi. I have also been a long time follower, and I really enjoy your blog!
But I too feel I have to say something. I found the photo of the factory collapse very powerful, and to those who take issue with it, if your an adult it's time to get real, who do you think is making the cheap overseas products you buy? faeries!? On that note though, I found some of the links following it, to be a sad and unthinking contrast....some of the stores selling the products on your wishlist will have workers working in the same terrible conditions. Surely that bears thinking about? No life spent working in unsafe conditions is a fair trade for a new dress.

    1. This is a great comment Vicci. I'll be the first to admit that I'm far from perfect, especially when it comes to my relationship with my clothing items. It's the harsh reality and sometimes we need that swift kick in the behind to wake up to it. However, I think it's so very complex and there's no "right answer" for everyone. It's not possible for every human to manufacture their own clothing, and even if it were, the fabrics and notions come from similar backgrounds. It's truly awful that so many people are basically "sacrificed" for our sartorial needs. Then again, it doesn't just stop with apparel. Apple plays into the system as well, and sometimes that makes it hard to own so many Apple products. I do hope the awareness will bring more of this to the mainstream, but even I sit here wondering what I might do because of it, ya know?

Thanks so much for your comment!

  19. I do not like seeing images like the Bangladesh picture that you added to your post, and I would never have clicked through to it on a link, but I am really glad you added it. It is so powerful and beautiful, it is all too easy to just to concern yourself with the pretty and fluffy things in life, but this is real, even if we don't like thinking about it, it shows what those people went through and what a catastrophe it was - sometimes I think we all need a little reminder as to how precious life is, so thank you, and well done. Em x

  20. Kaelah, the Make Love Not Porn founder has a WONDERFUL episode on the Savage Love podcast episode 308 (http://www.savagelovecast.com/episodes/308) If you're not a listener to Dan, you totally should be, his is one of my favorite weekly downloads!

  21. that Chandler Bing post >>>>

I just wanted to say, Kaelah, that that image wasn't any worse (to me) than some of the things I see daily. I know it's a very upsetting and unsettling story, but it's your blog and you post what you want. It's nothing for everyone to get up in arms about. It's real life. It *really* happened, and someone captured it because they thought everyone needed to see it.

I believe in censorship in some cases (like I definitely don't think Disney channel should throw around anorexic comments in their childrens' shows), but I thought you were completely in line by posting this picture.

  23. The image of the two dead people is really amazing and touching. I'm sorry people are acting all sensitive about it. "trigger warning" ... we're too sheltered, I think. Seeing what death looks like is very normal in most parts of the world, and it's a reality.
The photo was very tastefully presented and I mean really, it's not like you were the one holding the camera and making the decision to put the photos online. You didn't disrespect the dead by sharing, nor did you overstep any boundaries in my opinion. I guess that's one of the dangers of having a fashion-y blog when you're a real person ... people just want to see pretty dresses, not reality.
